Chanel Rouge Coco lipstick in Mademoiselle #5 ($30) is a medium, gently shimmery pink that is going to work for almost any occasion.   Coco Chanel was frequently called “Mademoiselle.”  The word, which in French denotes “Miss” (an unmarried woman), was appropriate for Coco who remained single throughout her life.  According to her, “I never wanted to weigh more heavily on a man than a bird.”  Mademoiselle is appropriately numbered “Number Five”— linking Coco Chanel’s name with the number of her iconic perfume.

Mademoiselle’s pleasant pink tone has enough opacity and life to provide an appropriate emphasis on the lips without overwhelming.  It’s for those quieter times when one wants to look polished, but perhaps not want to make an overwhelming lip statement.  Like many of the Rouge Coco shades, it has the very easy, lightweight and moisturizing formula.

This shade is so universal, I’m sure that it’s going to wear easily with almost everything.

  1. I think Mademoiselle is one of the more universally flattering shades in the line. Perhaps that’s why Chanel selected it for its advertising campaign. It seems to look good on warm and cool complexions alike. On me it looks like a medium warm pink with a touch of coral. On one of my friends, it looks like a true pink with no coral undertone. Mademoiselle seems to be a veritable chameleon 🙂

    • I agree it’s flattering–how strange that it is changing colors between you? On me it looks like the promo image for the line–that medium pink. I love it!

  2. It’s amazing just how flattering this pink is on so many different skin tones. I’m a MAC NC42 and I was scared to try this shade since it’s what Vanessa Paradis is wearing on the ads. We are the opposite of each other and surprisingly this works for me. I was lucky enough to score the very last tube? So how could I walk away from it? I really think this works across the board for many skin tones better than that coral Lancome shade that’s now part of urban legend!

On me it does look warmer..I’ll have to check it again to see if any coral shows through…
