Chanel Rouge Allure Extrait de Gloss in Excès (#60) is an iconic red shade.  This gloss has a brightness, clarity and warmth, particularly when compared to the deeper cooler tones of Fatale.  Excès is a true, bright red that delivers pure color without shimmer.

Excès bears a closer resemblance to Chanel’s Rouge Coco Gabrielle, although Excès is more sheer and certainly far glossier.  By comparison, Rouge Coco in Vendome is more brown.  Fatale is deeper and bluer than Excès, and Dragon is deeper and much more richly pigmented:

If you already have Chanel Spark Glossimer, you will immediately notice there is a distinct difference between the shades.  Excès is more true red than Spark, lacks the Spark’s shimmer;  also, Excès is more pigmented than Spark.

Here is Excès on Liz, on bare lips (no base, no liner and no lipstick beneath):

  1. I really love this color on Liz!

  2. Oh my gosh – that is SO gorgeous!

  3. Hi, Amy! I just got a call from my Chanel scout at macy’s that these new colors are in. I will be checking them out tomorrow. Can you please advise me about which colors to get? I am a fair-skinned, blue-eyed blonde. I am interested in one of the reds, but don’t know which would be better for me. also, there are 2 others i am interested in. One is described as a candy pink (insolent????) and another as a raspberry (emotiv????); i love hot pinks. finally, there are new nail polishes too to match some of the lip colors. which of these would you suggest? I thank you.

    • How fun Susie! Yes, Insolence is the most cool pink. I literally bought these in less than two minutes at a busy Duty Free at Charles de Gaulle airport, as I was on my way to catch a flight–I had no other time to play with the collection. It was grab, pay and run! I did not get the other Extrait de Gloss that you mention (or closely examine the names of the other products in this release), so I’m excited to see what you find.

  4. What blush is Liz wearing in the picture? I always wonder what blush to wear with a red lip, and hers looks great!

    • She’s wearing a Guerlain Terracotta bronzer–it’s called Orient Sun which was limited edition from a few years ago (we’d love to find another one, actually!) :) Having said that, Liz’s choice is a good one because a nude or bronze cheek is a nice choice with a strong red lip (assuming the bronzer is basically a darker version of your own skin tone). I would look for a a nude blush–something in the tan/amber/brown family. For fairer types, NARS Madly, Shu Amber 83 or even Lancome Meil Glace works well. Even a drugstore bronzer like NYC Sunny (around $2) will do the trick on some skin tones; I know that NYX is another company that makes good inexpensive blushes and they have a least one good sculpting nude. NARS and MAC makes nudes for darker skintones.

  5. Liz truly looks great in many things, so it’s hardly fair to say this… but Exces suits her so perfectly, looks so fantastic, she should never wear anything else. Gorgeous!
