If you were paying very close attention to Giorgio Armani’s Spring 2011 collection, you heard a sudden warmth and enthusiasm when beauty lovers discussed La Femme Bleue Long Wear Waterproof Eye Pencil ($27).  There was slightly hushed tone and a “don’t miss this one” intensity from those in-the-know.  The only item I ordered from this collection was this black pencil for one reason–to find out if it was, truly, the miracle pencil.  I’ve concluded that it probably is.

Released in three colors (black, brown and a deep green leaf), this pencil was previously released only in black and was sold out in an instant.  Although I’m enamored with my Le Metier de Beaute’s Precision Liquid Liner, I knew if I didn’t leap now that I’d risk missing out.

I’m not usually a fan of pencils because they tend to tug and pull, and go on unevenly.  Some have trouble smudging.  There are some exceptions, in fact Armani’s black pencil in their regular line is one of the best I’ve used.  Some of the Chanel and Shu Uemura’s are stellar.  I’ve had a few MAC Pearlglides that I’ve enjoyed.  For drugstore, Prestige’s Total Intensity is nice.

The Armani Le Femme Bleue blew them all out of the water.

This pencil goes on as soft as a gel.

It can be smudged.  I used my Chanel smudge brush (but any will do) during the first minute to create  perfect smudge.

Once it’s set, it’s really set.  Yes, it will last all day.

It lasted through a massive cry without budging.

The texture is very, very soft.

And its very waterproof.

And very black (no glitter, no shimmer, no gray).

Will it last on my waterline?  Yes, but I cannot say with certainty that it will last on yours–I’m to be cautious in this review as I’ve found that quality varies from person to person.

Downsides:  Curiously for a $27 pencil, there is no sharpener included (according to Charlestongirl at The Best Things in Beauty, sharpeners are free at an Giorgio Armani counter for the asking).  Unlike Armani’s standard pencils, there is no smudger on the flat end.  Unlike pen liners, it must be sharpened frequently to get a very thin, fine line.  Limited edition.

Bottom line: Expensive but buzz-worthy.  I deeply, deeply wish these were permanent.  Karlasugar has the other colors swatched here.

  1. I saw these in person last week and have been thinking about it all weekend. I think I’m going to cave in this week!

  2. The price was the only thing that scared me away from this one. I discovered that my MUFE pencils, after being half-used, had dried out! I bought four MAC Eye Kohls. This one looks wonderful, so it’s LE! There ought to be a sharpener though. Why do companies do these things?!

  3. I bought this in the black and dk brown; haven’t used the brown yet but the black is really lovely. I have been using it mostly for tightlining – goes on quick and smooth and stays put! Magnificent! :-)

  4. I have both the black and brown but I have yet to use them. I will try one of these tomorrow! Yes, I did get a sharpener with one of the pencils (I purchased them separately and it was the 2nd MA who said they were complementary). Do ask!

  5. For anyone who is curious, I have discovered that this is the exact same pencil as Urban Decay Perversion, found in the 24/7 Anniversary set. I have both and have been comparing– they are both made in Germany, doubtless by the same manufacturer.

    • Hi Julie–the unique thing about this Armani pencil is the texture. Are there other UD pencils with this very soft texture. I’ve tried other UD’s (not Perversion, but other colors) and they are not quite the same. Take care and thanks for your comment.

      • Yes, the texture of UD Perversion is different from all their other 24/7pencils- it is very soft like the Armani. I really think they are the same pencil.

  6. Hello! I love your reviews always so detailed:) So I guess you like this much more than the Mac pearlglides. I have Black Russian and am in fear of running out:( I recently bought smolder and it was a hot mess! I’m going to return it and pick this one up. What I love about the pearlglide is that it lasts long on my waterline. Does this one last longer on your waterline than the pearlglide? Thanks again for your feedback. Take care:)

  7. Hi Liz! First of all, I just recently discovered your blog and have fallen in love with it. It is now one of the three I read regularly. Your posts are amazing. Oh, and Liz is so, so lovely. I really enjoy the posts that feature her. Back to my original reaosn for posting…..these pencils changed my life. In a profound way. Best. Eye pencil. Ever. I got black and brown and am glad I did, because they seem to be disappearing from Nordstom.com and fast! Thanks for the post – these truly are heavenly!
