Chanel Ebene Eyeliner Pencil: Review and Swatches

May 4, 2011

Chanel Stylo Yeux Waterproof Eyeliner in Ebene ($29/ #10) is an automatic, twist up liner that does not require sharpening.  Because I lack patience, I love this style eyeliner.  Twist and go.  Sadly, the other end does not have a built-in smudger.  I always miss those when they’re not there.

Ebene’s texture is soft and creamy, giving you just a few moments to smudge the line.  Then it sets into a waterproof, budge-proof line.  This liner really does last until you take it off.  Numerous reviews on Makeupalley confirm that this is the weapon choice for the waterline.  I must admit that it did not last more than four hours on mine, but no liner ever has.  It did give me all-day wear on my upper lashline.

Ebene’s color is a soft near-black with a subtle blue pearl.  It shows as a deep, deep cool dark gray (a bit like a black pearl), rather than a straight black.  Love it lightly touched under the eye.

Here is a comparison with Ebene on the left (swatched light and heavy), compared to another standard black pencil that I have in my stash–Armani’s standard black pencil in Smooth Silk #4 (by the way, this is a great standard black pencil).

Really, one of my favorite black pencils right now.  Highly recommended.  I love it.

There is a built in sharpener in mine…

Yes, it is in the back – it sharpens very slightly so that you don’t end up with a blunt line!

Thank you both! :) So thoughtful (of you two AND Chanel for including it!)

I just love this liner. It stays on upper lashline until I remove it. Never sudges or fades.

In a recent Chanel makeover, an artist used this to tightline and it made such a huge difference. I usually wear some Indian kajal on my lower waterline so some of it transfers onto the upper lashline but this was the first time that I’d had a deep dark black upper lashline– it’s a nice effect. In addition the artist used the Spices quad on my lids and Rouge Noir shade of the Inimitable mascara: the combo was definitely one of the looks I’ll remember!

I really like Chanel’s Stylo Yeux Waterproof line, the Espresso shade is my go-to choice for my upper lash line. Like you, nothing stays on my waterline all day though.

Speaking of long-wearing pencils, I believe YSL has just come out with a small line of eye pencils meant to emulate the very popular Armani eye pencils (the black, brown, and green ones that came out with the Spring Transluminence collection); I saw the YSL ones on Sephora the other day, I’ll try those out next! With any luck, these may be the ones to pass the waterline test.
