Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Royallieu ($32 /#58) is a milky pink sheer lipstick. We first saw this on the runway, when Peter Phillips applied Royallieu to models in the Chanel Spring 2011 Couture show (pictured, below):

Close up:

Although Chanel did not release Royallieu with the original Rouge Coco Shine set this spring in the U.S., it was later added to the line and has been online for purchase since.

Royallieu is a soft, brightening pink with multicolor shimmer. Like the other Rouge Coco Shine lipsticks, Royallieu is sheer and light. The formula is moisturizing and balm-like. The lasting power is not going to rival the other Chanel formulas–it is a short-term, easy glossy look that can be applied without a mirror.
On Liz, plenty of her natural pink lip tone shows through:

Royallieu does not apply quite this pink on me, as my lips have a naturally darker mauve tone. Instead, Royallieu subtly brightens my natural lip color, giving a softer pink impression. Any lip color this sheer will look a bit different on everyone.
Here are swatches, next to Chanel Rouge Coco in Boy (reviewed here and here). Note that Royallieu is similar to Boy, but that Royallieu is slightly lighter and more neutral in tone. I’ve also added the more opaque, traditional medium pink Chanel Rouge Coco in Magnolia (reviewed here), so that you have a medium pink in the picture for comparison:

You can see that Royallieu is roughly as sheer as Boy. By comparison, the Rouge Coco formula of Magnolia provides a more opaque and vibrant (although still sophisticated) pink color.
Now that it’s summer and I’m enjoying a lighter makeup look, I’m finding myself reaching for lighter lip colors. Royallieu is a light, moisturizing, very pleasant color that can be applied with almost anything else one might be wearing. The color is subtle and the shine factor is high. It’s perfect to for an easy-to-apply color, to add a bit of light pink polish to the lips.

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.

Do you have any pictures of Liz w/o any lipstick/color of any sort on? Because it looks lovely on her but I can barely see your arm swatch, if it looks as fresh as it does on her on me then I want it badly! But I do wonder if it will even show up on me.
Hi Tammie! Keep in mind that Royallieu is very sheer! Also, take a look at this review at The Beauty Look Book for more thoughts–you can see on the arm swatch that is done in Sabrina’s post (toward the bottom) that it does not change her natural skin color as much as the other lip colors do.
I hope this helps! If you want a more long lasting, opaque look, Chanel Magnolia is a better choice!
Thank you so much for your response Amy
. Hmn, I think my lips are a bit more pale than hers so maybe I can do this color! Sorry for all the questions but how would you compare this to Joyeuse sheerness-wise? Comparing the pictures side by side the effect is similar in that it brightens, I have a lot of bright, bold lipsticks so I am trying to get some that brighten my face but aren’t bold colors right now for a change of pace, I am just scared of paying a lot and you see nothing! Or would you recommend I get Boy (I did read your reviews) instead?
I know that’s kind of complex, so you don’t have to answer as I know blogs are a time consuming hobby (I have a small one and find little time to update) so a simpler question for you is, what Rouge Coco Shine do I need to own? I have enough Rouge Allures right now, and I want to try the Rouge Coco Shines since I am kind of in love with that formula (I am addicted to Dior Addicts hehe, I have Diorkiss and Show).
Joyeuse is more cool than Royallieu. Also, Joyeuse does not have the shimmer/sparkle of Royallieu. Joyeuse feels creamier too–almost like a very soft oil is in the formula. My sense is that Joyeuse is more long lasting–it will show more than Royallieu. Also, consider more opaque formulas in softer colors, such as Désinvolte. And really, everyone who is looking for a softer pink look should consider Chanel Rouge Coco Magnolia. Also, I’m about to go crazy with posts about Burberry Lip Mists-stay tuned. Those may be just the right thing for you! They are lighter, softer colors in a gorgeous formula!
Thanks for your help! I already decided to pass on Desinvolte (not that I don’t like it though), I think I’ll keep from buying anything though until I see your Burberry Lip Mists review, I’ve been very curious about Burberry’s cosmetics anyways so maybe this would be a good intro to their line for me
.
Beautiful on Liz and beautiful description with the extra tid-bits of Chanel info that we all love! Royallieu is a stunner and surprisingly so. My heart sank when I opened the tube. It looked so … blah. On the lips, you described it perfectly – it will look different on everyone, but I think it will look gorgeous on most.
I bought this recently and love it for a natural no make-up look. Like you say in your review it gives a lovely light pink polish to lips and it is super easy to apply.
I love your blog, thank you for all your hard work. Your swatches and reviews are excellent and I love Chanel make-up which you review very regularly. Although my wallet is empty since I started folowing you!
I bought this when it was released and it has been my go-to lip color for most of the summer. I’m going to have to buy another one soon because I use it all the time. It is beautiful and works well with most of the looks I do. It’s versatile as I’ve also just worn it with Bronze Rose and mascara for the weekends….
Do you know what eyeliner they’re using in the third picture? I know its a long shot, but maybe you might know? I think it looks really dark, like how I like my eyeliners.
It’s Chanel Ebene (reviewed here). Here’s a complete breakdown of the items used on the runway.
