Francois Nars recently reformulated his skincare line, which I’ve been using for the past few weeks. For those who are looking for elegantly formulated, yet effective products, you are in for a treat. First, Nars Aqua Gel Lumious Oil-Free Moisturizer ($58/1.8 oz.) is a light, soft gel moisturizer. If you have oily to combination skin, or dislike heavy moisturizers, you may have found a jewel.

Gel moisturizers are a wonderful beauty secret when they are well formulated. Nars Aqua Gel is remarkably light, quickly absorbed, and has an almost-indectable pleasant light scent that fades very quickly. It works like a dream under makeup, as it leaves the skin with a moisturized, smooth and ready surface. It adds virtually no weight to the face, a few moments after application I was left with softened, smoothed, and softly glowing skin.  If I ran my hand over my face, I could not feel any moisture, tackiness or heaviness.

I used to think that oily skin did not require moisture–I was wrong about that. After a while, I finally realized that adding gel moisturizer gave my the right balance. I’m so pleased to find that Nars agrees–this is a perfect light moisturizer that doesn’t add to my oiliness, but rather smooths and moisturizes.

Bottom line: Perfect.

  1. This sounds lovely. I have never tried a gel moisturizer. I love everything Nars, I would love to try his skincare.

  2. Looks interesting. I see on the NARS site that it’s also alcohol-, fragrance- and paraben-free. Do you know if it contains propylene glycol or pentylene glycol? My ubersensitive skin can only tolerate butylene glycol. :(

    • I am sorry, I don’t know. I received this without a box so I do not have an ingredient list.

    • According to Beautypedia, it contains dipropylene glycol, as well as butylene and caprylyl glycols.
It also contains dimethicone (second on the list), which is a shame, as silicones make my skin break out in terrible takes-2-months-for-my-skin-to-recover cystic acne. I really wanted to like this but it is pass for me! :'(

  3. I’m going to have to check this out with my oily leaning combo skin. I’ve been testing out moisturizers and haven’t found one to make me happy yet.

    • Definitely see if you can get a sample made up. Its better than the old Shisiedo Pureness which I believe is now discontinued.

  4. I am impressed with this too. I was sad when I went to replace my Bobbi brown oil control moist and it was discontinued. I couldnt find anything else I liked until now.

  5. It feels like it has a primer in it as well.

  6. I’m using Kate Somerville’s oil-free moisturizer at the moment and am pretty happy with it, but I’m always looking for the next best thing. I may see if I can get a sample of this the next time I’m at the NARS counter. Thank you!

  7. This sounds lovely, I really like gel moisturisers. At the moment I am using Chanel Hydra Beauty Gel Creme and love it.

  8. For dry skin on your face check out Apothederm http://apothederm.com/
They have an amazing moisturizing cleanser and moisturizing cream. They work better than anything else I’ve tried.
