Chanel L'eclatante

The minute that I saw the promotional image for Chanel Spring 2013, I wanted to investigate the strong pink lip color. I emailed Chanel, who responded that the following makeup was used:

– Poudre Signee de Chanel Illuminating Powder (reviewed here)
– Chanel Joues Contraste Powder Blush in Frivole (reviewed here)

– Chanel Raffinement Eyeshadow Quad (reviewed here)
– Chanel Long-Lasting Eyeliner in Santal (reviewed here)
– Chanel Long-Lasting Eyeliner in Béryl (reviewed here)

– Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Luminous Matte Lip Colour in L’Éclatante
– Chanel Precision Lip Definer in Rubellite

– Le Vernis Nail Colour in Emprise

I found the lipstick in the promotional image–Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet L’Eclatante ($34), a striking deep pink.

I was concerned that I would not be able to carry off a color this bright and saturated. My fears were unfounded. Chanel understands. This is a believable, deeply gorgeous and luxurious pink.Chanel L'Eclatante1

The formula is genius–it applies as a soft near-matter but there is a very slight sheen. There is no sparkle. It feels rich and moisturizing when I apply. Although nothing lasts on me, this formula gives me up to two hours (that’s unusual for me, because I sip water frequently) with some eventual fading.

The color is saturating and brightening. Here is Chanel L’Eclatante on Liz (no lipliner or base):

Here is Liz wearing Chanel L’Eclatante. She’s wearing Chanel Vitalumiere foundation (Claire 20). She’s also wearing Tom Ford Bronzer in Gold Dust (discussed here).

Here are some comparison swatches of Chanel L’Eclatante with some other pinks:  Chanel Rouge Allure Luminous Intense in Secrete and Seduisante (reviews coming soon), and Chanel Rouge Allure Imagination. I’ve also swatched Chanel Rouge Coco in Chanel Magnolia. As you can see, she kept the rest of the makeup very simple, refraining from adding strong color elsewhere and keeping the rest of her face as a neutral, glowing canvas (Liz is wearing Chanel Hydra Beauty Gel Creme moisturizer under her foundation).

For more comparisons with other vibrant Chanel pinks, see this comparison post here on Cafe Makeup. As you can see, Chanel L’Eclante is an amazing color for Spring 2013. It’s a high end, sophisticated take on the “color is back” trend. I’ve worn it out for day and for dinner, and absolutely love it.

  1. what a gorgeous shade of pink! Just when I thought I had all shades of pink possible I see your post….must buy 😀

  2. Hey Amy! What a gorgeous color, and Liz looks beautiful wearing it! I stayed away from this color because its tones are a little bit too contrasting with my skintone to be flattering but I LOVE the “idea” of this pink! So, I wear it in the form of Rouge Allure Laque in Phoenix (#78), have you tried that one? It’s gorgeous, slightly warmer and perhaps a shade deeper than this lipstick. I also really enjoy Burberry lipmist in Camelia Pink as a cooler toned almost fuchsia version of this color. 🙂

  3. I have La Favorite, and I’m pleased with it! My first Rouge Allure Velvet is L’Impatiente, and I find the formula a little less forgiving than I’d like it to be. La Favorite is a lot smoother and easygoing for me. From what I can see L’Eclatante is as well!

  4. looks beautiful alot like Extatique or not? thanks

  5. Gosh! Does Liz ever look more stunning than this? Absolutely love L’eclatante on Liz, she looks, well.. eclatante! I tried this but it does not work on me, it pulls somewhat warm fuchsia bordering neon. I shall stick with something more sheer.. looking forward to your review of Seduisante.

  6. Hi Amy,
I am so glad you got this lipstick! I think this is my favorite lipstick from Chanel in a long, long time. It’s so bright, and the perfect alternative to red, if you’re bored with red 🙂
    Very chic.

  7. Precioso labial, es un tono muy favorecedor.

  8. Hi Amy
Liz’s eyes look stunning with the Nars Dark Rite pencil!
I thought this pink might be to bubble gum pink for me but it looks nice. I will have to check it out. I was trying to save some money and didn’t buy some of the lipsticks or the blush.
    So much for that idea…lol.

  9. Hi Liz,

Could you compare it with Insolente please.

    Thanks 🙂

  10. This color looks amazing, one of the loveliest pinks I’ve ever seen. The coverage is perfect too, not entirely matte but matte nonetheless. I love pairing with the blue under liner and nude lustre eye shadow. Gorgeous!

  11. hi amy!! i’ve had mixed feelings about this whole collection. my chanel beauty rep. said ” this neon color is to lead us into the new summer collection. my lips are extremely dry and peel. she told me i would not like this formula. now, i’ve been suggested to try this color but, she’ll put the new copper gloss over it. doesn’t that defeat the purpose of this look? peter phillips (spelling) wanted a matte lip for the model in this campaign (so i read). and, why would i purchase this formula and put gloss over it? i’m just thinking that’s a waste of money. i don’t know. makeup shouldn’t be stessful! what are your thoughts on this? xo. p.s. i would purchase this lippie just because liz likes it but, i’m thinking i’d really have to pack on the lip balm. xo.

    • I find these about as moisturizing as the Rouge Allure. Some find these drying, I find them moisturizing. Climate may play a part. I would feel better about recommending this if we could get your lips back to moisturized. I think little defects do show with this formula. So if surface dryness show with other Chanel lipsticks, they will with this too. The Rouge Allure Exrait de Glosses are cushiony by comparison.

Can you try it on alone at your counter to see? My lips aren’t perfect but I still love this one.

      • thankyou amy for responding back to me!!! when the rouge allures first came out, i should have known better. i was told that this formula really shouldn’t need gloss because it’s “illuminating” and so forth. i’m wearing the shade gracile and sweet beige over that. after a few hours, my lips are usually peeling. i really appreciate your input on this. yes, i really need to “test” this out at the counter but, i think this is just not going to work for me. i’ll use your future reviews of other products to guide me to my new spring look. xo.

  12. it was not supposed to be matte?
