Nars Hearts New York Set: Review

May 7, 2013

Nars Loves NYC03a

Just as I’m heading to New York City for a short trip, this incredible NARS Hearts New York City set ($65) arrived on my doorstep. Start spreading the news, Cafe Makeup loves this set. As much as we are on the road, this combination of neutrals with an edge combination is perfect for travel, or to keep in a bag for an ultra-long day away from home. The palette is slim, sturdy, and perfect for slipping into that tight bit of space.

This contains:

  • Amour Blush: Dusty rose with a hint of peach
  • Biarritz single eyeshadow: neutral cream colored beige matte
  • Nepal single eyeshadow: Soft, shimmery peach rose
  • New York single eyeshadow: Plum brown matte
  • Galapagos single eyeshadow: Bitter chocolate infused with gold
  • Laguna Bronzer:  a soft, slightly warm-to-neural everyday bronzer
  • Chinatown nail polish
  • Dolce Vita lipgloss

The palette holds the powder products. I love that the lipgloss is separate, and that the palette has no creams (which can get messy over time) The palette has an enormous mirror, which is perfect for travel.

I cannot think of a more efficient or perfect set up. I’ve loved Galapagos for so long, it’s a perfect liner color. The warm Nepal and the cool blue-burgundy New York play well together. Biarritz is an understated ivory matte which says “sophisticated.”

The Amour/Laguna combination is a perfect goes-with-anything combination.  This palette was made for us. Here’s Liz using Amour, Laguna, Nepal (lid wash) and Galapagos (in crease and beyond):

Application was pretty fool proof. I didn’t notice any difference between the single version of Galapagos and the one in this set. Liz applied Nepal and Galapagos on her lids with the Edward Bess Luxury Eye Brush, with a touch of Biarritz in the corner of her eyes. It was fast and foolproof. You can see how beautifully Nars Galapagos and Nepal do together on her lids (no base):

Liz is also wearing Dolce Vita in both pictures (above), which is one of the only glosses that I’ve already gone through twice:

Dolce Vita gloss is a true “your lips but better” shade that goes anywhere.

Nars Chinatown is a beautiful vampy dark red:

This dries to a shiny hard finish with full saturation in two coats. The texture is thin but highly pigmented:

Overall, Cafe Makeup hearts the Nars Hearts New York City set. I love how all of the products come packaged together for a well-coordinated, sophisticated look. For us, this set was a 100% winner.

This is available online at Nars Cosmetics, and will become available soon at select retailers (Barneys, Lord & Taylor, Saks Fith Avenue, Henri Bendel, and Bloomingdale’s Soho).

    Hi Amy,

NARS Hearts NYC looks like a gorgeous set! Everything in the set, from Dolce Vita, to Chinatown, to the eye and cheek shades are so wearable. It looks like the colors here would transition nicely into fall as well!

Is New York only available in this palette or can I buy it separately (something about the name of the shade is telling me it’s the former, sad times)

    • Amy May 7, 2013 at 2:09 pm

Agree, Georgie, I’ve never seen this as a separate shade I’m sorry to say.

    • Laurie May 7, 2013 at 4:30 pm

Yes New York is a shade that you can buy separately and I bought it a year ago. It is in the matte eyeshadow category:)

That’s wonderful news, Laurie! It looks like a really useful single–the pigment is wonderful. Soft as butter!

Thank you for such a stellar review! I always wanted to buy NARS big palette and this seems to be exactly what I was hoping for. Very exciting! Cannot wait to take this on my own trip to New York this summer. All of the colours look beautiful on Liz.

Also, a second big “Thank You” for your continuous dedication to this blog. Everything from your beauty selection and swatches to “in action” shots is a delight to read. Tremendous job!

I know this is a post about NARS but I was wondering if you’ll be doing a review of Chanel’s newest mat lumiere perfection foundation soon? It sounds absolutely amazing and I would love for your thoughts. Thanks! :)

Hi Tiffany, I haven’t purchased that one yet, I’ll take a look at a counter. I’ve been playing with the idea of a powder foundation, and I was going to see whether the Dolce & Gabbana one might work too. Stay tuned?

I think Nepal is my favorite. Subtle but with a hint of trouble.

It’s limited but many Nars sets are available for a fairly long time (in fashion terms–weeks, sometimes a month or even longer).

OMG!!! This is a pretty set. Love the colors and shade for I find them light and natural. I also love the nail color for it looks classy and elegant. This is a must have.

I absolutely love the Chinatown color. I like to wear deep rich shades like that because I have a darker skin tone.

I love the Chinatown polish. I like to wear deep dark colors because my skin tone is darker.
