Nars Promiscuous01

Like the NARS One Night Stand blush palette (have I mentioned my obsession with this palette yet?), the NARS Promiscuous Set ($45) released for Holiday 2013 will be available at Sephora exclusively (based on the materials that I’ve received). This set comes with a large cosmetic pouch, approximately  7 1/2 by 5 inches. It also happens to come with some of my favorite pencil shades from NARS incomparable line.

Nars Promiscuous02

This pouch is a tough, good quality vinyl and should provide years of use. I love a bag with a decent zipper, this one has one that is both robust and attractively integrated into the design.

Nars Promiscuous03

Unlike many lip pencils which provide a color base for lipsticks or gloss, NARS pencils of this type are meant to be used as  the main event–they are complex colors and thoughtfully designed textures used to create the lip look on their own.

Nars Promiscuous04

The NARS Promiscuous set contains mini versions of Cruella Matte Velvet, Sex Machine Velvet Matte, Dolce Vita Velvet Matte, Never Say Never Velvet Matte, and New Lover Velvet Gloss. These are some of my favorites, so I think this is a well-chosen, nicely wearable and versatile selection.

Nars Promiscuous18

If you haven’t tried NARS pencils, the Nars Promiscuous set is a wonderful place to start. The pouch is a nice addition–the size is excellent for keeping things together in your office desk, weekend bag, the gym, or your purse for those necessary touch-ups.

Note: The Cruella, Sex Machine, Dolce Vita, and Never Say Never Pencils are listed as 0.06 oz, and New Lover as 0.08 oz in size. These measure roughly 3 3/4″ in size each.

The NARS Crime of Passion palette ($59) packs some beautiful, highly wearable colors together in a remarkably compact space. This system is well-designed to accommodate a nice range of neutral looks, with high quality products that accommodates a wide range of skin tones and looks. Also called the NARS ‘Guy Bourdin – Crime of Passion’ Eye, Cheek & Lip Palette, the size of NARS Crimes of Passion is a small 3 1/2″ by 3″ size, and about 1″ deep.

The top layer includes three eyeshadows, which are all new shades. First a new light shimmery Jezebel, a new metallic rose-brown Naiade, and a super pigmented black matte Pandora. Nars one night stand do-over3

Tis the season to pick up a NARS blush palette–this year’s treat is the NARS One Night Stand ($65) available at Sephora. This year’s offering brings three new shades, as well as three classics. This format is truly wonderful for anyone (like me) that spends time on the road. I have the feeling that this would be parfait for a trip to Paris or any other multi-week trip.

Nars One Night Stand Palette1

Why did NARS call this a “One Night Stand”? This palette is perfect for a long term relationship!

Nars One Night Stand Palette2

According to the back label of this palette, each pan has a total of 0.14 oz (4 grams), and a standard Nars blush has 0.16 each, so each pan is slightly smaller than a full sized standard Nars blush. Because standard blushes are $29 each, this six pan is a fabulous value at $65.

Nars one night stand do-over1

This palette contains: Laguna bronzing powder, Deep Throat (flirty, sheer peach), Orgasm (peachy pink with golden shimmer), Mistinguette (bright matte pink), Goulue (medium pink), and Devotee (highlighter). I especially enjoyed Devotee (top left), which has more pretty shimmer than Albatross.

Overall, NARS One Night Stand is another winner. With three new shades (including that gorgeous highlighter Devotee), this palette includes a highly usable set of extremely high quality blushes in a single, slim, easily stored-and-packed package. Love.

Nars Splendor in the Grass Cheek Palette Review and Swatches

Blush, Bronzers, NARS  Comments Off on Nars Splendor in the Grass Cheek Palette Review and Swatches

Nars Splendor in the Grass1

There is a new multi-tonal blush palette released in the Nars Splendor in the Grass Cheek Palette ($49), set for release to Nars boutiques, Nars online, and select retailers (presumably, this will not be available to all Nars retailers). This palette includes a mix of shades already in Nars standard line, and therefore is a nice introduction for those who do not already own them, or for those who want a lovely combination of pre-selected shades in one easy-to-use place.

Nars Splendor in the Grass2

Unlike some of the items in Nars Holiday line, Splendor in the Grass does not have the “Guy Bourdin” red splash logo on the outside of the palette.

Nars Splendor in the Grass3

This large palette measures out to roughly 3 1/2 by 2 1/2 inches, and includes Albatross Highlighting blush (shimmery white), Dolce Vita, Angelika (sparkling cool pink), and Sex Appeal (light, soft peach). It has a giant, beautiful mirror and slim profile that’s so lovely for tucking into a drawer, cosmetic bag, or overnight bag.

Nars Splendor in the Grass4

Swatches:

Nars Splendor in the Grass7

Because I’m a big fan of these colors, and they looks so pretty in combination, Nars Splendor in the Grass is well worth a god look. Albatross and Sex Appeal can be pretty upper cheek shades, while Dolce Vita can be used to sculpt the cheek lower on the face. Angelika is one of those brightening, life-giving shades that can be used with the entire combination (or not). I did a look with this palette this morning and –oh my–it really does deliver excellent quality, gorgeous pigmentation, finely-milled texture, and a really flattering flush of color. I love having the highlighter right there. Sometimes to save time I skip highlighter, and really, life is too short to skip highlighter! My upper cheekbones thank you Nars!

Let’s think about if forced to choose (don’t make me!), what you might do if you had to choose just one of Nars Holiday 2013 blush palettes. On one hand, if I didn’t have many blushes, I’d be very tempted to skip some lattes and put them toward the slightly more expensive iNARS One Night Stand ($65) blush palette (reviewed here). I like the fact that there is more choice in the One Night Stand palette, and the cool pink in the six-pan palette has no sparkle.

One the other hand, some people have a serious amount of Nars blushes already–Laguna and Orgasm have certainly made their appearances before. In that case, I would certainly be tempted by NARS Splendor in the Grass as a well-executed sculpting palette. When I used this one, the combination of Dolce Vita and Albatross was stunning (together with a pop of the smaller Sex Appeal). I think you’d have to review your blush stash to see–but you certainly can’t go wrong with Splendor in the Grass.

Chanel Le Blanc Light Revealing Brightening Makeup Base SPF 30 Review

Chanel, Skin care  Comments Off on Chanel Le Blanc Light Revealing Brightening Makeup Base SPF 30 Review
Oct 302013

Chanel Sunscreen21

Chanel has recently introduced the Chanel Le Blanc Light Revealing Brightening Makeup Base SPF 30 ($55/ 1 oz.) in the pink-toned Rosée to the U.S. market.  Chanel describes that this is:

A lightweight, oil-free makeup base helps to correct uneven skin tone, smooth imperfections and extend the wear of any foundation that follows to give you a radiant complexion. Pearl protein and licorice extracts work together to counteract dullness, while pure white mineral-ceramic pigments give you a natural glow. The formula is also enriched with SPF 30 and hyaluronic acid to protect your skin.

Chanel Sunscreen22

I’ve been using Chanel Le Blanc in Rosée for the past few weeks. First up, in my opinion, this is not a product for everyone.  I do believe, however, that there is a certain demographic that will absolutely adore the results, and I fit within that demographic and so I’ll provide my experiences.

Chanel Sunscreen26

Have you ever noticed the glow that very young children seem to have? Even warm toned skins seemed to have a touch of dewy freshness. As we age, go through hormonal changes, acquire age/dark spots/scars, or even have a fading tan, our skin may seem to lean a bit darker or warmer than we are used to from our younger days. This manifests in unevenness that is hard to conceal unless one wears some spot-treatment concealers or medium to full coverage foundations. It makes cooler colors hard to wear on warmer skin tones–skin just doesn’t look bright, clear and super clean. Even so, these solutions don’t seem to have the same glow factor that’s so beautiful about younger skin. Chanel Le Blanc Rosée blurs, corrects, and helps hide uneven skin colors, and adds a fresh-faced base that mimics that youthful pink glow.

Chanel Sunscreen29

When I use Chanel Le Blanc Rosée on my warm NC15/20 skin, it evens out the color imperfections, serves as a matte primer to extend the wear time of my foundation, acts as a sunscreen, and gives my skin a pretty, fresh, youthful, delicate, light, ethereal color cast that knocks off a few years. It’s surprisingly flattering.

Chanel Sunscreen23

More ingredients (click to enlarge):

Chanel Sunscreen24

Chanel Le Blanc Rosée will certainly work on cool skin tones as well, indeed pinks look lovely on cool toned individuals. Note that there is no way on this planet or any other that I would wear Chanel Le Blanc Rosée without foundation–the pink is unnatural without at least a sheer wash of color that matches my skin tone.

Chanel Sunscreen31

In the past, I’ve used a few other Chanel bases, including the former Blanc Lumiere (in 20 Mimosa, pictured above), the Asia-exclusive Le Blanc in 30 Lys, and the U.S. UV Essentiel sunscreen (which applies sheer/clear).  Lately, I’ve been reaching for Chanel Le Blanc Rosée because I love the fresh look and longevity that it provides. It makes my skin look prettier, and isn’t that the whole point?

Chanel Sunscreen32

Blanc Rosée has been a wonderful brightening base product for the last several weeks–definitely my favorite primer so far. It really brings a youthful, tone-evening luminosity to my skin. So far, so much love!

Chanel Accent Blush03

Chanel Joues Contraste Accent Blush ($43) is a new addition to the Chanel’s superior line of blushes. This U.S. purchased version is the beautiful pressed powder version with microsparkle that seems to disappear into the skin for a soft glow upon application.

Chanel Accent Blush04

I probably should have titled this post “first look,” because I’ve had scarce time to get to know this beauty as my schedule has been quite challenging lately. Nonetheless, I thought it best to post the information that I have so that it can be updated later on.

Chanel Accent Blush05

From all of my experience with the blush so far, Accent seems to be worthy successor to Chanel’s prior nude blush range (and, in some ways, for the former Orchid Rose as well). Although it looks like a brown, sparkling product in the pan, keep in mind that the magic of Chanel’s Joues Contraste range has always, always emerged after application. As you can see from the below swatches, Chanel Accent applies as a soft rose brown with a touch of mauve.

Chanel Accent Comparisons 3

Here is Chanel Accent on the far left, followed by Chanel Tempting Beige, Chanel Mocha, Chanel Rose Bronze, and Chanel Tweed Brun Rose.  As you can see from the swatch of the Chanel Bronzer Terre Ambre, a true bronzer in Chanel’s line, Chanel Accent applies as a neutral brush and not at all similar to this warm, amber-bronze.

Here is Chanel Accent on Liz, as you can see it applies as a soft rose neutral on her skin tone:

Chanel Accent Blush applied 2b

So far, Chanel Accent looks like a winner. I’ll update as we continue to work with the blush.

Chanel La Desiree1

Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet La Désirée ($34), newly released for within the new holiday collection, looks dark and vampy in the tube. Before playing with the shade, I had the impression that this was a velvet cousin of Chanel’s famous Rouge Noir lipsticks. Although we found that Chanel La Désirée applies on the deeper, saturated end of the color scale, it does not apply with any similar near-black darkness of some of Chanel’s past vampy shades.

Chanel La Desiree2

Instead, Chanel La Désirée is a warm dark velvet red that is more intense than Chanel Rouge Coco Rivoli (see below for comparisons). On Liz:

Chanel La Desiree4

Here are comparisons of Chanel La Desirée with Chanel Rouge Coco Vendome, the very intense Chanel Rouge Allure Rouge Noir (#109), Chanel Rouge Coco Rivoli, and Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet La Provocante.

Chanel La Desiree comparisons 1a

As with other Chanel Velvet formulas, the color applies with a moisturizing feel and a satin-matte texture. Chanel La Désirépulls a bit warm on me. It’s a striking, beautiful color that looks lovely for Fall and the holiday season.

Chanel La Precieuse24

Chanel La Precieuse1

Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet La Précieuse ($34) is a new Chanel velvet formula lipstick that applies as a rich strawberry red. A beautiful color to wear with grays and other rich fall colors, this is a pretty color that doesn’t seem to have a twin in my current collection.

Chanel La Preciouse3

As the name implies, Chanel’s Velvet formula is not a true matte, but still preserves some luster when applied. The formula feels like the typical Chanel Rouge Allure formulation–on Liz and I, it feels very moisturizing.

Chanel La Preciouse7

Here are some comparison swatches with Chanel La Précieuse compared with Chanel Rouge Coco Gabrielle, Chanel Rouge Allure Palpitante (reviewed here), Chanel Rouge Allure Flamboyante (reviewed here), and Chanel Rouge Allure Incandescente (reviewed here).

Chanel La Precieuse21

Another:

Chanel La Precieuse24

Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet La Précieuse is a beautiful, rich color in a lovely satin-velvet formula.  It’s newly released as part of Chanel’s Holiday Collection, and is definitely appropriate for either day wear or for evening. Lovely.
