Chanel L'Adoree2

When Chanel’s Spring 2014 Collection released last month, I went to several different counters to test the products. I was unable to find products that captured my imagination, although I’m still looking at the lip pencils as potential items. I found that this collection’s items–as much as I tried to love them–were just a bit off for my coloring, or didn’t really seem to have the uniqueness that I’ve come to expect from the line.

Although I’m very excited about several upcoming items from Chanel this year, for now I chose a single lipstick as the one “must have” item for me this season. I know that some of my readers will be surprised. Indeed, although I have not always had time to cover them on Cafe Makeup, I’ve continued to buy extensively from Chanel collections for the past several years. Spring 2014 is the least that I’ve purchased from a Chanel release in a very, very long time.  Hopefully, the rest of the year will look much better.

At any rate, I chose Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet in L’Adorée ($34). This matte-satin deep mauve is an unusual shade, yet still has enough sophistication to look fabulous.

I love the Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet formula, and I would have purchased the other velvet in this collection (Diva, a neon pink), except it seemed a bit too bright. Chanel L’Adorée is a near-opaque, but has enough transparency to be modified slightly depending on the color of your natural lips.

Chanel L'Adoree7Alternatively, you could tweak it toward the red side by using Chanel’s Vamp/Rouge Noir lipliner, or more purple with Amarante. Here are swatches to show Chanel L’Adorée against the more red Chanel Rivoli, and the comparatively darker Chanel Rouge Coco Rouge Noir and the Chanel Rouge Allure Rouge Noir.

Here is Chanel L’Adorée on Liz, looking gorgeous (no base, no lipliner, and no gloss):

Although I love Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet in L’Adorée, I wish that I could have fallen more in love with Chanel Spring 2014. Based on their recent runway looks, I’m sure that there will be many more items to love this year. For now, I’m enjoying this Rouge Allure quite a bit.

  1. This shade looks quite interesting, even when I lost fondness for Chanel lip products (I’ve found Guerlain fits better my requeriments in that matter). I wonder how this compares to Nars Full Frontal or Shiseido Iron Maiden.

  2. Gorgeous berry shade! How does the formula feel on the lips? Is it drying?

  3. Gorgeous pick Amy, thanks so much for the review. L’Adoree is also one of my picks, together with Illusion d’Ombre in Diapason. I started thinking Chanel should really do something about their regular quads and agree with you on the originality of the collection, I hope Summer collection will be more original.

  4. Hi,
In terms of color, how does it compare with the Chanel Rouge Allure Déterminée (#108) & old limited edition Chanel Rouge Allure Laque Stunt (or M·A·C Kissable Lipcolour Flaunting It)?
    Thanks! 😉

    • Hi there, you have a very good eye!

Stunt looks to be the liquid/laque version of L’Adoree (because Stunt is a liquid, it appears slightly darker, but I really think that is due to a difference in texture). I don’t own Determine, but based on this swatch, it looks quite close to L’Adoree in color (L’Adoree is the velvet, Determine is the standard Rouge Allure texture).

Which probably explains my love of L’Adoree because I love Stunt so much. Thank you for your comment! 🙂

  5. The collection looks great to me! Although, my skintone is quite a bit deeper (and choclate-y-ier than yours so I’m looking at it and thinking it’s all glorious to me! I love your lip pic and I also am eyeing the blushers and the nail polish…everything really. Chanel seems to be realizing that their clientelle base is diverse in skintone so they’re perhaps opening themselves up to more classic rich pigments that flatter women like me too. I like it!

  6. Purple/Orchid is 2014’s colour of the year too so that’s also contributing to the lipstick colour. I’m loving it!

  7. Thanks for reviewing L’Adoree. It was the one lipstick in the collection that intrigued me (but I liked a few other things: the blushes and the glossimer Sonate). Your comments and swatches are very helpful–I have the feeling I’ll end up with L’Adoree sooner rather than later.

  8. The only lipstick I picked up from this collection is L’Adorée as well, although like you, I really really really wanted to get the hot pink – with my colouring, it just looked awful. I did, however, pick up a number of other items that I am completely bowled over by, namely #69 Intonation blush and the quad — it is totally amazing! The pink shade is one of the best I have ever come across! Naturally, I couldn’t leave the nail polishes behind and while neither shade is that unique, they are still quite lovely! Hope you give these products another look – they are total sleepers, let me tell you!

  9. Oh, wow, I did not even pay attention to this lipstick on the promos, but on the lips it looks amazing! Will have to try it now.

  10. L’Adorée is beautiful, any chance you know how it compares to Culte? Thanks!
