Decontructed Rose 1aI’ve been playing with the Bite Deconstructed Rose Lip Gloss Library ($49), a set of twelve mini-glosses from a company that is building a name in excellent lip products. I’m sincerely impressed the Bite Agave Lip Mask (reviewed here), which delivers all-day effective results. In my opinion, the  Bite Agave Lip Mask fits right up there with other best-in-class lip balms. I had high hopes for the Deconstructed Rose glosses.  Overall, my hopes weren’t met 100%, although the set definitely has several excellent points.

deconstructed rose 3The set has twelve mini-sized (0.05 ounce) glosses in numbered shades:

  • One (light pink/mauve)
  • Two (rosey pink)
  • Three (light coral)
  • Four (raisin)
  • Five (mauve)
  • Six (dusty rose)
  • Seven (dusty coral)
  • Eight (muted cherry)
  • Nine (apple red)
  • Ten (jewel red)
  • Eleven (dark red/brown)
  • Twelve (deep purple)

This set is ideal for someone who loves a natural, flattering look. In my life, this would be an amazing graduation gift, end-of-year teacher gift, or a set to keep on my desk to grab over the summer to add a touch of polish to casual-day looks. These feel do not feel either moisturizing or drying. They are medium-shine.

deconstructed rose 14Overall, you can refresh your summer lip library with this set, and have every shade you could possibly need. Ten to eleven of these are extremely flattering colors on almost any skin tone. When we were testing these out, Sandra and I noted that the middle-to-deep shades really do look lovely applied. Most Cafe Makeup readers know that I’m quick to point out any potential issues. Here, I think many readers will find shades numbered 1 though 6 or so a bit on the sheer side. Part of the issue is, I think, that the gloss tubes are made with very, very tiny openings. So as you pull out the doe foot, the gloss really gets squeegeed off (is the at word?). In other words, the doe-foot feels a bit dry after you pull it out, so I found myself dipping back in three of four times to get a good layer of gloss going especially with the lighter shades. For example, here is shade three on Sandra with only a single swipe:

Here is shade six with a single swipe. Again, the sheerness surprised us:

DR six2

Here is shade eleven with two swipes. As you can see, the color is much deeper:

DR eleven3a

Also, high-wind alert, these feel a bit on the sticky side (pony-tail time!). Here are few examples of the tubes:

In a world where luxury glosses go in the $20-30 range, the Bite Deconstructed Rose Lip Gloss Library offers a pleasant alternative for those quick-BB-cream-and-go days. Also, I think the gifting potential for this set is enormous, particularly for friends who may want a simple bit of polish for everyday (who doesn’t?). I think this set delivers a wide range of highly usable shades, particularly if the glosses are layered to punch up the color. Luxury readers who want to add a bit of fun will be tempted to get this to use for everyday causal looks, but will continue to reach for Chanel, Dior, and the like for more formal occasions. Bottom line–well worth considering.

  1. These glosses look amazing. This kit is very tempting, since these mini glosses are feasible for me to use up and that way I would get to try out a bunch of shades.

  2. I really want this set but I’m afraid the sheerer shades might just disappear on me!

  3. This is a great gift idea for Mothers’ Day. The ingredient list looks mostly natural. I think all mommies (and non mommies) will like this!
