YSL Leather Fetiche eyeshadow quad1It seems that every Fall, there are a handful of items that insiders identify quickly as the must-haves of the season. These have extraordinary quality, universal appeal, and are typically limited edition. Yves Saint Laurent’s Couture Leather Fetiche (Leather Fetish) 5-color eyeshadow palette ($60) is one of those items for Fall 2014. As I write this, the palette is available at Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, Yves Saint Laurent online, and Neiman Marcus. I had ordered mine from  Saks Fifth Avenue, but it appears to have sold out there. I’m sounding the beauty alarm on this one–do not wait.

YSL Leather Fetiche eyeshadow quad2 I had just cued up some pictures of Yves Saint Laurent’s new couture line of eyeshadow palettes when this one arrived. Given the ephemeral nature of limited edition products, I’m moving this one earlier. To summarize that review (which will appear later), YSL has appeared to have decided to amp up the quality of nearly everything. Good for us all–innovation in the beauty space seems have moved over the past few years from new formulations of lipsticks, mascaras, foundations (this is still very much happening), and now I am seeing a wave of reformulated eyeshadows that is truly extraordinary. This YSL Couture Leather Fetiche is a “best in class” for that category.

Every shade here is a winner–buttery, pigmented, blendable, gorgeous. The highlight and carmel shade on the right are extremely flattering shades. The deeper browns work beautifully worked into the lashline or smudged into the crease. The blue is an extraordinary and rare shade (echoed in this leather-textured Bleu Galuchat nail polish) that is inky, edgy and interesting (and also draws the palette into the universal “works on cool skin tones too” territory).

YSL Leather Fetiche PaletteOverall, the Yves Saint Laurent Leather Fetiche palette is one of the must-haves of the upcoming Fall ’14 season. The palette is available at Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, Yves Saint Laurent online, and Neiman Marcus. I had ordered mine from  Saks Fifth Avenue, but it appears to have sold out there. If it sells out soon, I’m very sorry!

  1. I’m going to look at this one very carefully. YSL presentation has been phenomenal recently; product quality, in my opinion, less so. But this does look so stylish and tempting. Susan, London

  2. Yum!

  3. Though I adore the new YSL palettes, I was going to pass on this. I’m not quite sure why. Your review convinced me to pick it up. Thank you so much.

  4. I have been wanting this palette, it looks beautiful! I am wondering do you think it will work well with hazel eyes? If so, I am going to get it before it sells out!

    • Mine change from blue to green and yes! Should be beautiful with hazel eyes too. The warm brown-blue should play with your eye color!

  5. I found it too dark and warm for my NW10/15 skintone, but it is a lovely palette. The blue is really the stunner of the palette – such a deep, rich color!

    • I’m surprised how much I love this palette on light skin tones. It does indeed have an amazing color range, and the two lighter colors are lovely too.

      • I suspect it’s because I have a hooded eye shape, Amy. 🙂 Unless I’m going all out for an intense smokey eye, too many dark shades on the lid tend to make my eyes look smaller or even tired. Women with more lid space will probably get a lot of use out of this, particularly if they have blue or green eyes. Mine are a cooler brown with tiny specks of green in the iris, and they need all the help they can get brightening up!

  6. This palette looks so pigmented! I really like the highlight and caramel colors, but I tend to shy away from dark shadows. The dark shadows would be gorgeous as a liner, but I’ll stick to my new Chanel quads instead :).

  7. Not so unique i.m.o Even the blue one is similar to Mac Contrast e/s or with some of Inglot e/s
