artis 6A few weeks ago, I picked up the Artis Oval 3 Brush ($36 with free shipping from Net-a-Porter), to use with sparkling or highly shimmery eyeshadows that need a bit of buffing. Artis is a niche brush company that uses animal-free CosmeFibre to create a line of brushes with an ergo dynamic shape that is said to provide even, easy application with superior performance. Their bushes are said to use product more efficiently, because the ends of the bristles are designed to pick up and lay down products in a superior way. As you can see, their brushes use significantly more brush fibers than traditional brushes.

Here are some images of the Artis Oval 3 for eyes:

I found the Artis Oval 3 very pleasant to use. Although it looks awkward, it’s actually quite easy. The bristles are like little teddy bears, they are gentle on lids and seem to minimize (although not eliminate) glittery fall-out for some high-shine powder formulas. The design does allow for easy buffing, for shadows that look a little rough until they are buffed and blended (Urban Decay eyeshadows fit into this category). Although this image might not say much, I did a quick side-by-side swatch of a Shu Uemura shimmery shadow from their neutral palette with a traditional MAC 242 paddle-shaped eyeshadow brush on the left, and the Artis Oval 3 brush on the right.

Overall, I think many will find the Artis Oval 3 easy for packing on color for a vibrant effect, or to soften the effect of some metallics. It’s going to be useful for a few eyeshadows that I really like, but seem to take a little more work than others.

Tonight on Friday Night Beauty, U.S.-based QVC viewers will have to chance to pick up this special Artis 3-piece set for $89 (on QVC’s website here).

artis 15According to QVC’s website, this set includes:

  • The Linear 1 has a very narrow (about 1mm to 2mm) row of fibers to help concentrate product application in a line, such as along the lash line. This brush can apply a precise line of product along the upper lash line or tucked under the lower lash line. It can also be used to fill in and define the brows and can simulate brow hair lines; or can be used to apply a defined line along the lip or any other part of the face. The Linear 1 brush is very helpful for special effects makeup to create crisp lines and linear shapes.
  • The Oval 3 assists in shading and blending the products applied to the outside and inside corners of the eye lid and smaller areas of the eyelid. This brush is also useful for applying foundation or concealer to the inside corner area of the eye or on the side of nose by the nostrils.
  • The Oval 6 is great for applying product to the entire eye lid, foundation to the face, or contouring the cheekbone area. This brush applies blush beautifully to the apple of the cheek and blends it so that the application looks natural.

You might note that Net-a-Porter also has a few different brush sets available as well.

  1. It reminds me of a toothbrush. Does it take some getting used to because of the shape?

Also so glad to see the Shu-Palette. So under-rated in my opinion. Have it and love it!

    • It’s pretty intuitive. I got good results the first time.

Love the palette too – its my only eyeshadow this summer. So lean, so full of goodness.
