Burberry Effortless Eye Kohl1

There is a new eye pencil on the market–Burberry Effortless Eye Kohl in Poppy Black ($30/0.07 oz.). This roughly 4 inch pencil is a smooth, well-pigmented and long-lasting eye kohl. The pencil glides easily and leaves plenty of dark, rich color. Burberry has packed a sharpener with the pencil.

Burberry Effortless Eye Kohl2

I had the best results using this pencil in true kohl style–pulling the pencil sideways against the lash line. This avoided any tendency to skip and minimized any unevenness that could be introduced by a minor shake of the hand. This also minimizes the need to sharpen the tip, because the tip is not the primary application point using this side-to-side method. I’ve been using Poppy Black for almost two weeks without sharpening by pulling it sideways along my lash line, whereas with a more traditional point-first application, I’m sure I would have had to sharpen it once or twice already.

Burberry Effortless Eye Kohl551

I liked the Burberry pencil quite a bit–you have just a short 20-30 second timeframe to smudge it if you like. It works beautifuly. I found that this long-wearing, non-irritating pencil was a welcome addition to the Burberry line. I kept reaching for it day after day, and I enjoyed the results.

Burberry Effortless Eye Kohl6

Is Burberry Eye Kohl in Poppy Black a must-have? If you are looking for an elegant, well-formulated pencil from a premium line, you should give it fair consideration. I mean, I love mine. However, as you might guess, the results of one black pencil over another is marginal. Above is a casual,  non-scientific swatch of two other black pencil liners–Chanel Ebene ($30) and Prestige Deepest Black  (about $5 from the drugstore). In application, the results are not terribly distinctive. Liz is wearing the Burberry Eye Kohl in Poppy black in the image in this post, but it’s very difficult to tell whether it’s this Burberry or the Prestige which she typically wears.

Nonetheless, I’m very happy find the high quality of this pencil in Burberry’s line. At present, I’d recommend the formula and I’m excited to see whether Burberry will be releasing any unique and interesting colors in the future.

Burberry oxblood lip mist

As the winter months move through Northern California, I’ve been loving my deeper toned lipsticks more and more. The one that I’ve loved most has been Burberry Oxblood Lip Mist ($30) because of its rich, moisturizing formula, deep-jewel toned color, and sheerness that looks young and modern. Used without a pencil liner, the look is polished and yet never overdone (and certainly not goth!).

Burberry Oxblook Lip Mist8

Here are comparisons with other deep sheers in my collection–Burberry Blueberry Lip Mist (which is close), the sheer, deep wine Yves Saint Laurent Pourpre Intouchable (reviewed here) and Chanel Rouge Coco in Rivoli.  Burberry Oxblood has a good kick of color. With a medium-intensity liner underneath (I’ve been using Chanel Rose Cuivre (reviewed here), although others can be used too of course), it gives serious, rich, shiny color that lasts for hours. When worn alone, the wear time is better than Chanel Rouge Coco Shine, and about as good as the Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupte Shine.

Burberry Oxblook Lip Mist4

Here is Burberry Oxblood on Liz, without any liner, primer or base.  Here is a full-face look:

Burberry Golden Radiance 3

Here, she is also wearing Burberry Nude Radiance Fresh Glow on her upper cheek (reviewed here) and forehead, and Burberry Nude Radiance Fresh Glow Powder on her lower cheek (reviewed here). She’s also wearing Guerlain Crazy Terracotta as a blush, Burberry Lip Mist in Oxblood. She’s styled her fair with the T3 Bodywaver (also available at Sephora), Alterna CC Caviar Cream and Alterna Luminous Shine Mist.

Overall, I’ve been loving Burberry Oxblood. It’s been a lovely addition to my cooler-toned based looks this wintry season.

Burberry Nude Glow highlighter09

Burberry Nude Glow highlighter05This is a review of the Burberry Nude Radiance Fresh Glow Powder ($48), the sister of the Burberry Golden Radiance powder (reviewed here). As you might expect, Burberry’s Nude Radiance is the powder version of the liquid Burberry Fresh Glow Fluid Base (a product that can be used as either a primer or a highlighter, reviewed here). The powder version is a soft glowing highlighter.

Burberry Nude Glow highlighter01

As you might expect, Burberry Nude Glow works beautifully with the cool toned shimmery Golden Radiance. We found that, applied with one of our favorite large, soft brushes, the powder gave a slightly cool toned glow. You will want to use a brush with plenty of soft flex. I thought that the brush that was included with the product–although quite respectable quality for a give-away–applied the product a little too heavily to the point of frosting up a touch.

Burberry Nude Glow highlighter09

Subtle highlighters are a bit difficult to capture in a photograph. Here, I tried to capture the liquid Burberry Fresh Glow next to the powder Nude Radiance. As you can see, the tonality of both is quite similar. Unsurprisingly, the liquid has a more pronounced glow and can be mixed directly with a foundation. The powder is more subtle, but might be preferred by those who prefer that medium. Both are more subtle compared to Kevyn Aucoin’s Candlelight (reviewed here), but more pronounced than the subtle Poudre Signe de Chanel.

Burberry Golden Radiance 3

Here is Liz wearing Burberry Nude Radiance on her upper cheek and forehead, and Burberry Golden Radiance on her lower cheek. She’s used the same look in the picture below, but with Guerlain Paresse on lips (in softer light):

Burberry Golden Radiance Bronzer 3

There is a nice glow with Burberry Nude Radiance. Even close up, applied with a soft brush, we detected only very subtle sparkle in direct sun. If you prefer this look without sparkle, go for the liquid Burberry Fresh Glow instead.

Burberry Golden Radiance08

I’m loving the pairing of Burberry’s Nude and Golden Radiance for a winter glow. The cool tone for both makes these are wonderful, unique option for those with cooler skin tones, or those looking for a cold-month version of a summer highlighter/bronzer combination.

Both are available at Nordstrom and other Burberry sources.

Burberry Golden Radiance01a

Burberry’s line has a notably original product called the Burberry Fresh Glow Golden Radiance Powder ($48). This is part of last summer’s release. However I’m finding that this particular powder works beautifully for winter, at least for me.

Burberry Golden Radiance03

The items come packaged in the heavy, luxurious Burberry plaid-embossed packaging, a soft outer case and a slim wide brush.

Burberry Golden Radiance04

Here are the two powders (a review of the Nude Radiance will follow soon):

Burberry Golden Radiance20

Despite its name, the Burberry Gold Radiance powder applies as a cool-toned, shimmery powder that reminds me of a soft, glowing taupe. I expect that those with cool skin tones should take a look at the powder, so long as they are up for some radiant shimmer. I found this powder works beautifully for  the gray-skied winter months, when my overall color palette in clothing and makeup is more subdued and neutral, because it leaves a sort of silver-taupe impression. If you are a bronzer aficionado, you’ll immediately notice that this “radiance powder” is distinctly different. Consistent with this gorgeous, unique quality, Burberry Fresh Glow Golden Radiance Powder is not sold as a bronzer. As Liz identified, there is something distinctly Burberry about this powder.

Burberry Golden Radiance02

I originally tried this when a Burberry sales associate tried it on me in August, paired with the Nude Radiance powder at the same time. The products do coordinate beautifully together and give a beautiful glow.

Burberry Golden Radiance07

Here are swatches of two bronzers–the warm amber Chanel Terra Ambre and more neutral Nars Laguna. In addition, I’ve swatched MAC Taupe Shape blush (limited edition and no longer available) so that you can compare the cool qualities of Burberry Fresh Glow Golden Radiance Powder:

Burberry Golden Radiance24

Another (different lighting):

Burberry Golden Radiance28

Here is Burberry Fresh Glow Golden Radiance Powder on Liz, which is most evident on the lower part of her cheeks. She is also parring this with Burberry Fresh Glow Nude Radiance Powder (above her brows, on upper cheek, and on her chin) and Guerlain Crazy Terracotta on the upper cheek as a blush:

Burberry Golden Radiance Bronzer 3

Another wearing Burberry Fresh Glow Golden Radiance Powder on the lower cheek, anBurberry Fresh Glow Nude Radiance Powder on her upper check, chin and above her eyebrows and with different lighting:

Burberry Golden Radiance 3

You can see that Burberry Golden Radiance gives a soft cool quality to the skin, and the Nude Radiance adds a lovely fresh and lovely glow to her skin. She’s also wearing Guerlain Crazy Terracotta as a blush. In this picture, she’s wearing my new winter love, Burberry Lip Mist in Oxblood. She’s styled her fair with the T3 Bodywaver (also available at Sephora), Alterna CC Caviar Cream and Alterna Luminous Shine Mist.

Burberry Golden Radiance09

Although the weather’s turned colder, I still can’t give up adding a touch of color and dimension to my beauty routine. Burberry Fresh Glow Golden Radiance Powder has become one of my go-to’s (paired with Nude Radiance). I absolutely love it. The product is unique, not fitting comfortably within the bronzer or highlighter category. Instead, Burberry is creating a niche of its own.

burberry nailBurberry Nail Polish ($21) is currently being rolled out as a new product category for the line. I’ve been impressed with many of Burberry’s formulas, and so I couldn’t wait to try it. Although some of my choices are still on backorder, I wanted to give you a few thoughts on some colors that have arrived– Nude Beige and Oxblood. Both are classic “Burberry” colors, and reminded me of the iconic plaid color that evokes the brand’s neutral aesthetic.

Burberrry nail01

At $21, the price is friendly and the commitment is low. The bottles hold roughly 0.27 fluid ounces of product, which is on the smaller end for a premium polish (Chanel are typically marked at 0.4 oz., and Dior and Guerlain at .33 ozs.). Honestly, I rarely evaluate products on their volume. As the Chanel, Dior and Guerlain come in at a higher price point than Burberry, I suppose that overall the price point seems all in line (as high end beauty goes). Purchasing from outside the U.S., Color Me Loud has more colors in the Burberry line as well as some comparisons.

Burberrry nail02

The bottles use a rich glass etched with the line’s logo, and the iconic plaid on the cap is etched in (just as it is with Burberry’s other fluid products).

Burberrry nail03

When the caps are removed, you can see that the bottle extends upward:

Burberrry nail07

The brushes are slightly wider than normal, which eases application (although not as wide as Guerlain’s or Dior’s). I found the Burberry brush highly workable and the formula was quite easy to apply.

Burberrry nail08

Burberry Nude Beige is a neutral beige with high opacity and high shine (without a topcoat).

Burberrry nail06

I approached this color with some trepidation–indeed, I ordered this color to see how Burberry could handle something so pale. In other brands, lighter whites, pastels, and beiges can go streaky or require numerous coats, which causes them to look too thick once applied. However, Burberry appears to have mastered the challenge quite successfully–this is opaque in two to three coats (depending on how heavily you apply this with the brush). It didn’t streak up or look goopy or thick. Pretty amazing. Burberry Nude Beige on my nails:

Burberrry nail17

Here are some comparisons with some other light neutrals, including Orly Country Club Khaki (a taupe), Rescue Beauty Lounge Plie (a light pink), Chanel Beige (which runs sheer), and Burberry Nude Beige (which is opaque):

Burberrry nails08

Burberry Oxblood is a beautiful rich cool red. I adore this color beyond all reason.

Burberrry nail05

Burberry Oxblood is shiny and opaque in two coats. It is gloriously pigmented. Yes, you need it.

Burberrry nail12

Burberry Oxblood is lighter and more red, compared to some other vampy darks in my collection. Here are comparisons with the very dark Guerlain Vega, the shimmery Chanel Malice, and the dark red/black Chanel Madness, Accessoire, and Rouge Noir.

Burberrry nails09

Overall, Burberry’s nail colors are impressive. The formula so far is excellent, the application is easy, and the overall look is gorgeous. These will fit well within the aesthetic of the rest of the line–excellence in formula, classic colors, and highly wearable and beautiful colors.

Available at Nordstrom, and other Burberry sources.

Quick post61

First, the Holiday season is here, so much love and fun (and a dash of stress!). To relax, I love to indulge in bath products. Between us, Liz and I have gone through about a dozen Lush bath bombs in about a month–is there anything like too much indulgence? We say no, if Tom Ford can take five baths a day, we say “Lush bath bombs away!”  I think I’m moving toward a L’Occitanne obsession next.

Quick post41

Second, giving the gift of good skin is always a lovely thing to do. I couldn’t resist this Clarisonic Mia First–perfect for travel–for $99 at Nordstrom yesterday (also available at Sephora). For the worldwide traveller, the charger converts automatically from 120 to 220/240 volts so that you can use this elsewhere with just a plug adapter.

Burberry oxblood lip mist

Third, Burberry Beauty is back in a big way. After a transition from an outside manufacturer, they’ve released a Holiday collection that includes a gold nail polish call Light Gold with a gold-toned cap. Above is their new Burberry Oxblood Lip Mist.  The Burberry eyeshadow range is back in stock, and I’ve been told that their highly build able and long-wearing Sheer Luminous foundations have not been re-formulated (thank heavens! I’ve just bought my third bottle).

Quick post51

I’ve also picked up their Burberry Kohl eye pencil to try. It’s short, but I’m hopeful that the quality level is there. We’ll see.

Quick post21

I’m also excited to see the items that Burberry will be releasing in 2014–they definitely have some exciting new formulas and colors on their release list.

nars eyeliner

Fourth (I know, more than three), I’ve concluded that the Nars Stylo Eyeliner ($27) has won out over the Marc Jacobs Beauty Magic Marc’r ($30) in my book. Although slimmer, the Nars Stylo lasted far longer (it never seemed to quit) and contains more product. Also, I found that the Nars brush pen held up better than the Marc Jacobs (although I use them both the same way, and I’ve used my Nars far more). Although I enjoyed using the Marc pen, I won’t be re-buying it. However, I did re-order the Nars Stylo replacement this morning.

Quick post32

What are you obsessed with right now?

The NARS Stylo was sent to Cafe Makeup without charge for consideration for review (although I bought my replacement with my own funds). This post contains affiliate links (for more information, see About Cafe Makeup).

Long Wearing Foundations01

Now that we’re entering the summer season, I thought it would be useful to do an entry about warm weather foundations. Last late summer through the end of fall, I was living on the road doing extensive traveling throughout the hot, humid areas of the American South. Keep in mind, as a Northern California resident, I’m no stranger to hot weather. At Cafe Makeup, we weather our share of over-100 degree days. However, there’s a lot of truth to that expression “It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity.” I remember the blast of warm, humid heat that rendered my favorite foundations powerless to withstand the afternoons. Not kidding–I have a whole new level of respect for those who wear makeup in humid climates.  It’s a whole new level of challenge.

Burberry Mallow Pink 1a

Spring 2013 brings new lipglosses to Burberry Beauty— I chose Mallow Pink (#19) and Pink Sweet Pea (#20) ($27 each).  Both have a similar formula–beautiful, glossy and well pigmented. These vibrant colors apply with a nice dose of rich color which nearly cover my pigmented pink-mauve lips (not all glosses do).

These have a slight perfume scent which fades after a minute or two, and I find that these are non-drying. They are one of my favorite lipgloss formulas for comfort and longevity.
Burberry Mallow Pink 2a

Burberry Mallow Pink is a rich pink coral.

Another look with both Coral Pink blush and Mallow Pink blush:

Burberry Coral Pink12a

Burberry Pink Sweet Pea is a vibrant pink with blue pearl. This combination has some edge. Although Burberry has some amazing strong reds, Pink Sweet Pea breaks new ground as one its standout pink glosses.

This is a vibrant, pigmented gloss.

Here is Burberry Pink Sweet Pea on Liz, which is comparatively cooler in tone compared with Burberry Mallow Pink:

Here is a full look, with Burberry Pink Hydrangea blush (reviewed here).

Burberry Hydrangea Pink 3a

Here are some swatches with some vibrantly colored glosses in my collection. Here are Burberry Pink Sweet Pea, Burberry Mallow Pink, Chanel Courtisane, Chanel Pink Pulsion, the very sheer Chanel Fluo Laser, Chanel Pink Teaser, and Guerlain Terracotta Gloss Fraise a Coquer (this was limited edition from a past collection and no longer available, and yet it’s spectacular).

One more, same glosses different lighting:

Bottom line: If you are looking for vibrantly colored, yet sophisticated, beautifully formulated glosses, these are both amazing choices. The colors are brightening and gorgeous.

Burberry Coral Pink2b

Spring 2013 brings Burberry Coral Pink Blush ($42) a warm, deep rose with a touch of coral. Like Burberry Hydrangea Pink (reviewed here, also released for Spring 2013), Coral Pink is a very intense color that requires care during application. In the photographs in this post, we used Nars Yanchiyo brush to ensure light, controllable color.

Burberry Hydragea Pink3

Coral Pink and Hydrangea Pink look similar in the pan. When applied to cheeks, Coral Pink is warmer.

I have no coral blushes remotely similar to Burberry Coral Pink. The closest that I found is Guerlain Series Noir Rouge G blush with the colors mixed. Here are swatches of Burberry Coral Pink, Burberry Hydrangea Pink, MAC Hipness, and Guerlain Rouge G:

Burberry Coral Pink 3a

More swatches of Burberry Coral Pink and Hydrangea Pink are here. Here, Liz is wearing Burberry Coral with Burberry Mallow Pink (also new for Spring 2013). She is also wearing Nars Dark Rite under her eyes, and a touch of Nars Corcovado (Spring 2013) adding a touch of gold to the undereye area.

Burberry Coral Pink4b

Both colors will work on cool and warm skin types. That said, Hydrangea Pink will be more dramatic on warmer skin tones. If you have warm toned skin, Coral Pink will give you a vibrant but more natural look compared to Hydrangea Pink.

Another:

Burberry Coral Pink Blush 1a

Both blushes are a welcome addition to my collection. Although I love Burberry’s other blushes, these vibrant colors are lovely, gorgeous colors that brighten for spring.
