Review: Dior Nude Air Summer Glow Shimmering Loose Powder

May 12, 2016

Dior Nude Air

Dior Nude Air Summer Glow Shimmering Loose Powder ($56/0.56 oz.) is a finishing powder that delivers a softening, blurring effect with a bit of an ethereal warm glow. Limited edition as part of Dior’s Milky Dots collection for Summer ’16, this powder immediately caught my eye.  I’m a fan of beautiful textures (and I’m a bit over-saturated in highlighters), so I thought that Summer Glow would be a fun addition to my summer beauty collection.

Bottom line–Some will love this and back it up, while others will not love it. I found that this works as a beautiful glowing summer finishing powder when applied with a large fluffy powder brush. Despite the sparkles you see in the powder, I found that this application method doesn’t appear to translate those sparkles to the face (checked in several different types of lighting). It gives a beautiful, warm, glow effect that is similar to some of the “glowing foundations” that we’ve seen released lately. I love the effect. Alternatively, Dior Summer Air can be used as an glow over blush for those looking to add a touch of warmth.

Dior Summer Air Shimming Loose Powder is available at Nordstrom, Sephora, Bergdorf GoodmanLord & Taylor, Neiman Marcus, and Saks Fifth Avenue (and Harrods in the UK).

This lush tub of luxury powder appears to be made of a plexiglass, which makes it both strong and pretty. It’s packed with a puff (no brush). Although the Dior specialist recommended using the puff for all-over application, I haven’t worked up the bravery to do that yet.  I don’t think she was wrong, she was quite insistent in fact (she said it three times! okay!) If you look closely at the powder, you will find that it is full of a very fine iridescence (this accumulates on the plastic sifter lid, below right). This powder’s name includes “Shimmering Loose Powder.” With a concentrated highlighting brush (like this one from Charlotte Tillbury, but others will do), Dior Summer Sun can create a subtle highlight.

Dior Summer Air 3

Keep in mind that this powder works best applied sheerly, and the tone is deeper than a typical highlighter. Here’s a comparison with Dior’s Nude Air Highlighter in Glowing Pink. After playing with Dior Summer Air, I decided that the Dior sales associate was on to something. Although I don’t like using the puff (I prefer a large fluffy brush), Dior Summer Air is a beautiful all-over glowing finishing powder. In fact, it reminds me of a deeper, summery version of Chanel Feerrie.

Dior Summer Sun 13

Dior Nude Air 2_edited-2I suspect that if you are (like I am) beautiful face powders, Dior Summer Air is worth your time. Applied softly all over the face, it gives a similar impression to some of this Spring’s glowing foundations (not as glowing as Becca’s, more similar to Giorgio Armani’s). If you go this route apply in a very sheer layer with a large fluffy powder brush. It dds a touch of healthy summer color without going all the way bronzed.

Alternatively you can apply with a smaller brush as a concentrated soft highlighter or glowing powder over blush.

The packaging is beautiful Dior–lighter than glass, but still makes my heart race with the quilted silver top. Certainly, it will work as a body powder as well if you love the look.

Dior Glowing Gardens Glowing Nude #2 Highlighter Review

January 18, 2016

Dior Nude Air Glowing Gardens 1 - 1 (3)

Now that Peter Philips is in control at Dior Beauty, we’re beginning to see some lovely things. His Glowing Gardens collection for Spring 2016 is hitting so many of the right notes. _behind-the-scenes-with-peter-philips_medias_coverThe Dior Nude Air Glowing Gardens highlighters ($58 with a mini kabuki brush) have been their most popular items. I’ve ordered them so many times, only to have them become cancelled because they’ve gone out of stock. At this point, your best hope is to call your local counter or a Dior boutique to find them. Although the year is young, I suspect that these will become remembered as one of the better products of 2016. There are two, both highly reflective shimmering wonders. One is #1 Glowing Pink, the other is #2 Glowing Nude. After several cancelled orders, I finally nailed down both of them. Unfortunately, my Dior #1 Glowing Pink shipment has gone to California to enjoy some warm weather and won’t be here until next week or so. Because these items are likely to go completely out of stock soon, I thought I’m post some preliminary pictures of #2 Glowing Nude so that you can decide whether these are worth pursuing.

Dior Nude Air Glowing Gardens 1 - 1 (5)

These beautifully appointed glowing beauties are similar in formula to Chanel Mouche de Beaute and MAC Whisper of Gilt. Here are some comparison swatches.

Dior Nude Air Glowing Gardens 1 - 1 (1)

I think the presentation and quality of these is well worth the price, particularly if you missed out on Chanel Mouche de Beaute (which has a touch of sparkle, but is otherwise similar).  If you are looking for them, please do not wait too long. Given my experiences, they will be completely sold out before too long. Check here at Sephora to see a few left.

Concealer Dior

Review: Dior Fix It 2-in1 Prime and Conceal

December 14, 2015

Dior Correct and Conceal 1

As I was wandering into a Sephora in a recently-installed mall in downtown Salt Lake City (which is lovely, by the way), I noticed a new display for the Dior Fix It 2-In-1 Prime & Conceal ($36). This stick concealer has a translucent core, which is a primer/corrector that keeps the product from migrating and smooths the skin beneath.

Dior Correct and Conceal 4

The texture and coverage of any concealer are the most important attributes. Dior Fix It 2-In-1 Prime & Conceal has medium coverage, but it’s layerable. Because I’m quite tired these days, I combine with with my Giorgio Armani Orange Corrector to give me excellent coverage. To use this product, I placed the tube directly on my undereye area and swiped it across. The primer mixes pretty well with the pigmented cream product during the swiping, but I found that a few taps with my ring finger were needed to really smooth things out.

The texture of Dior’s Fix-it was neither dry nor moisturizing. It’s creamier (and not as dry) as Lancome Effacernes. It’s not as moisturizing as Clarins Instant Concealer. What Dior’s Fix-It does better than any other concealer that I’ve tried is to grip without the slightest migration throughout the day. If you find that your concealer seems to find its way into tiny lines, emphasizing their existence (no thank you!) then Dior Fix-it may be your new best friend.

Two words of caution–there are only three shades available:  Fair, Medium and Dark. I bought the Fair, which I thought was a little cool for me. It’s certainly fine, especially for this time of year when the sun is harder to find. Still, I’m probably spoiled by Nars’ huge range of Radiant Creamy Concealers. Second, I wish the coverage were a bit stronger. I found myself able to layer without cakey build up. I think the primer dilutes the pigmentation of the concealer slightly when applied, so I’ve settled for using two swipes to compensate. This last criticism is not a reason not to buy, but I thought I should note it. The product advertises that it erases fine lines–while it does soften them, and provides a nice texture to the area, I don’t believe I can say that my lines fully disappeared.

Dior Correct and Conceal 2

Overall, Dior’s added something new to the concealer game–the non-migrating, stays in place all day feature. The packaging notes that this product can be used under eyes, on the face, as well as on the lips as a way to blot out one’s natural lip color. This is a really lovely, useful concealer that does seem to ensure that my undereye area is nicely textured and covered.

Paris Beauty Crawl #2: Le Bon Marche and the 7th Arrondissement

August 2, 2015

Paris beauty crawl 2

My prior Beauty Crawl, which is modeled after a pub crawl, focused on the areas surrounding the two major department stores near L’Opera Garnier and down toward Le Louvre. Today, I’ll discuss another option that centers on Le Bon Marche located in Paris’ 7th Androssiment. I did an earlier version of this walk a few years ago. This is an update with many more photographs.

les deux magotsYou’ll notice that my map starts with two cafes in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés area. Both are lovely and offer a wonderful start to your shopping day. Les Deux Magots was once a rendezvous points for writers and artists, including Simone de Beauvoir, Jean-Paul Sartre, Ernest Hemingway, Albert Camus, Pablo Picasso, and James Joyce.

Today at Dior Couture

July 6, 2015

The makeup was simple at today’s Dior Couture show in Paris. According to Peter Philips, creative and image director of Christian Dior makeup, “it’s all about skin, skin, skin, and a touch of peach on the eye.” Philips sent models down the runway at Dior Couture with peach shimmer lids, gleamy cheekbones, and “leftover shine” lips.

Paris Haute Couture Week: The Backstage View of Dior, Chanel, and Armani (oh my!)

July 9, 2014

ddCan you tell that it’s Haute Couture week in Paris? Dior seems to be entirely renewed with the work of its lead fashion designer Raf Simons, who showed his work against a wall of orchids at Paris’ Rodin Museum. This year’s haute couture used graphic shape as the canvas for the complex handwork embroidery and modern details that is setting new standards for the historic haute couture craft. The show featured embroidered silk coats, elegant ball skirts and soft, sophisticated color.

Dior My Lady Glowing Blush Palettes: 002 Pink and 003 Coral

June 1, 2014

Dior My Lady Blushes1aThis summer, Dior’s My Lady Glowing Blush Palettes ($60 each/0.35 oz.) have been remarkably hard to get. In two colors, 002 Pink and 003 Coral, these are both intricacy etched, finely milled, and beautifully formulated.

Dior My Lady Blushes2aI was able to order mine from a Dior boutique, and I noticed today that both are up for sale on Saks.com. Probably Dior’s most stunning pieces from a gorgeously successful beauty season, these are well worth a look. Packed with mini-kabuki brushes, they both offer a lovely combination of colors that blend into a beautiful, glowing, natural wash of color. Here is Dior My Lady #002 Pink, which applies as a soft cool violet-pink. Love the signature Dior Cannage etching:

Here is Dior My Lady #003 Coral, which is a warm, gorgeous soft red-coral.

Dior Resort 2015 Backstage Beauty with Peter Philips

May 20, 2014

christian-dior-resort-2015-beauty-01_125435622807.jpg_gallery_max

This is a quick note to bring a few new Dior products to your attention, all used at Dior’s recent Resort 2015 show.

Dior 9

One of Cafe Makeup’s favorite makeup artists and now Creative Director of Dior Makeup, Peter Philips, created the look using three new products that we will want to keep an eye on.

Dior 7First, Peter used Dior Addict It-Liner ($31) to create a disjointed line on the top and bottom lashes.

dior.cruise15-video-still

Gorgeous:

Dior 4Philips also used black eyeshadow traced over the liner, as well as a shimmery pink shadow on the lid and an iridescent white shadow between the two black lines at the outer corner. “I used pink on the lid because white would look too pearly. The pink blends in better and creates a subtler highlight.” The final effect:

dior-resort-1

Some models used  the new Dior Addict It-Lash Mascara ($26)  mascara on their top lashes. “I like this brush because it keeps the lashes really separated,” Philips said.

Dior 3

Third, Philips used a new Dior Foundation–called Diorskin Star Foundation— for a matte/luminous look.

dior-resort-3According to Philips: “It’s a matte finish, but it stays very luminous when it’s on the skin. It gives your skin a movie-star quality.” According to a video on Dior’s website, the effect is a lit-from-within, luminous effect.

Screen Shot 2014-05-20 at 9.43.52 PMI cannot wait to see how these products compare to other premium lines. In the meantime, enjoy a few more images from the show.

Dior Addict Fluid Stick in Pandore Review

May 4, 2014

Dior Pandore Addict Stick1 Dior’s Addict Fluid Stick ($35) is a new range of liquid lipstick that, at first, I tried very hard to ignore. I was under a mis-impression that the formula was nice but I was unsure whether any of the colors would work. I was so, so wrong. After an hour at a local counter, I think the only problem with this range is that nearly all of the colors work on a wide variety of skin tones. Who can get just one? Dior Pandore Addict Stick2 I’m starting my collection with Dior Fluid Stick in Pandore, a lovely pink-red. Although I know that I’ll be branching out very soon to get several more. Dior Pandore Addict Stick3 Pandore is a rich, bright, gorgeous red that can be worked into any season. Anyone that loves neutral makeup as much as I do will find that Pandore offers a perfect touch of brightening color that is always appropriate. Here is the doe foot applicator, which is quite easy to use: Dior Pandore Addict Stick4I’ll give the bottom line early (spoiler alert!)–Dior Addict Fluid Sticks are a gorgeous, gorgeous formula. I need at least two more–a pink and a nude. Maybe a deep color as well.  The quality is beautiful, and these look amazing on. Liz prefers to wear this more sheerly, and I prefer to load up the doe-foot for  a full force red. Here’s Liz’s lighter touch with Dior Pandore: Dior Pandore Addict Stick5 And a quick, rich swatch…. Dior Pandore Addict Stick6 Overall, we’re loving Dior Pandore. And I’m loving this new formula. Below, Liz is wearing Dior Fluid Stick in Pandore, Nars Lost Coast eyeshadow duo, Chanel Perfection Lumiere Velvet Foundation in #20, and Nars Olympia Contour Blush.

Dior Addict Fluid Sticks are available at Nordstrom.com, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, and Macy’s.
