Perricone MD has a full line of No Makeup Skincare: A Revolutionary Approach to Color, and the base products have already been reviewed here and here. This line of products is available at Sephora and Perricone MD’s website.

Perricone MD Foundation Bronzer Concealer Mascara BlushThis entire incorporates anti-aging skincare, to repair, restore, and to ensure that the overall look is youthful. In addition to antioxidants, DMAE, and neuropeptides, the line is formulated with high pigment that sits lightly on the skin, which can be built up, sculpted, modified, mixed and blended to achieve a look that is healthy, natural, and with a youthful look. As I said in my prior posts, I loved several of these products. However, I loved, loved, loved the products together as a set.  First, I was shocked at how quickly I could do a face with this set. It’s no brushes required. The products are essentially fool-proof once I got comfortable with the format. They blend beautifully together, and their textures are ideal for layering. They are designed for very intuitive application. Although it is easy to layer them up to increase coverage, it seems impossible to over-do them. There is a real synergy in the design and formulation for use as a set.

This review considers the remaining products in the line:

  • No Bronzer Bronzer
  • No Blush Blush
  • No Concealer Concealer
  • No Mascara Mascara
  • No Lipstick Lipstick

There were a few products that were true standouts. One was the Perricone MD No Bronzer Bronzer ($35/.03 oz.). This liquid bronzer has some lovely qualities, including the ability to bronze, darken foundation shades, contouring, and to meld beautifully with the skin when blended.

Perricone MD No Makeup Skincare05a

The No Bronzer Bronzer has some skincare ingredients in the mix:

– Vitamin C Ester to help brighten the skin and address visible sun damage.
– Non-chemical, mineral-based SPF 30 with Zinc oxide to protect from UVA and UVB rays

I consider these a nice plus, because I am not sure that I’ll personally use the No Bronzer Bronzer in a sufficient quality to derive large benefits from these. However, I do appreciate the well-formulated serum texture, which makes the product easy and intuitive to control. It reminds me a bit of Giorgio Armani’s Liquid Summer serum bronzer.

Here are some quick comparisons between the Armani Liquid Summer Bronzer and Perricone MD’s No Bronzer Bronzer…

The Perricone MD No Blush Blush ($35/0.3 oz), is a pretty universal rose color that seems to work well with both cool and warm skin tones. It also adds a touch of natural pink to a bronzed cheek to make a sun kissed look. According to the line, this blush includes DMAE (to help to firm and tone the skin, restoring the appearance of lift and contour along cheekbones) and non-chemical, mineral-based SPF 30 with Zinc oxide (to protect from UVA and UVB rays).

Perricone MD No Makeup Skincare07aThis liquid blush is remarkably easy to use, and very hard to over-do. I dabbed on 1-3 touches of the doe foot applicator on each cheek, and blended for a natural look. Unlike liquid stains, the Perricone No Blush Blush was forgiving and did not require lightning reflexes to avoid a dotted cheek–foolproof, truly.

Here is the ingredient list for the No Blush Blush (click to enlarge):

The Perricone MD No Concealer Concealer ($35) is released in shade #2, a light creamy medium-coverage color that blends nicely, doesn’t crease and has good lasting power.

Screen Shot 2014-06-13 at 10.21.29 PM

I’ve used the prior version extensively, and I’ve been pleased with the skin care ingredients. It’s very good.

– Vitamin C Ester for brightening and collagen boosting
– Phospholipids create a barrier to protect against environmental aggressors
– Microcirculatory agents help treat dark circles
– Non-chemical, mineral-based SPF 30 with Zinc oxide to protect from UVA and UVB rays

Perricone MD No Makeup Skincare09b

If you are familiar with the prior version, this is the same formula but in a more convenient format.

Perricone Mascara1

The Perricone MD No Mascara Mascara ($30) is a lash treatment and mascara. According to the line, this includes:

– Neuropetides help regenerate, condition and nourish lashes.
– Biotin improves the healthy and quality of lashes with each application
– Tocotrienols condition and smooth lashes

 Perricone MD No Makeup Skincare10a

This color is a dark brown-black (see swatch for color, below), and delivers a very clean, lengthened lash, adding slight volume. There is zero clumping, instead the look tends toward a natural, uplifted, and long look. It’s very pretty, and the fact that is is nourishing is a lovely plus.

Perricone MD No Makeup Skincare11

The Perricone MD No Lipstick Lipstick ($30) is another product that I fell in love with. The color is a pretty, soft pink that’s highly wearable by those with many different skin tones. It’s a soft of “all occasion pink.” The texture was absolutely lovely–it’s very hydrating and seemed to soften the texture of my lips.

Perricone MD No Makeup Skincare12a According to the line, the No Lipstick Lipstick:

– Mimics the natural, rosy color of youthful lips and vermillion zone.
– Smoothes vertical lip lines and restore suppleness and fullness while protecting with a broad spectrum,  mineral SPF 15.
– Solid to serum texture allows for sheer, buildable coverage while hydrating and nourishing.

This feels lovely, and makes my lips look years younger. I hope that more colors of this formala are released. I’m including swatches of all shades here:

Perricone MD No Makeup Skincare19As you can see, the serum color is a near-match for the No Foundation Foundation in #2. I did a quick finger-blend of the swatches, above, without being very precise or careful. On the skin, a proper blending job delivers smooth and lovely results.

Mascara1

Overall, I loved using these products. These are extremely easy to use, impressively long-wearing, and allowed me to get ready in less than five minutes. My skin looked beautifully natural, and I loved the fact that the product have skincare benefits. Although I wear my standard SPF 50 sunscreen, I appreciated that there is sunscreen woven into the formulas.

Perricone MD has a full line of No Makeup Skincare: A Revolutionary Approach to Color that provides “good for you” benefits together with foolproof and versatile application.  Although I was aware of some of these products, I was impressed to see an entire lineup that, because of its liquid format, can be mixed and blended to create naturally beautiful looks. The theme of this collection are anti-aging skincare additions, which repair, restore, and to ensure that the overall look is youthful. In addition to antioxidants, DMAE, and neuropeptides, the line is formulated with high pigment that sits lightly on the skin, which can be built up, sculpted, modified, mixed and blended to achieve a look that is healthy, natural, and with a youthful look. The items are available at Sephora and Perricone MD’s website.

  • No Concealer Concealer
  • No Mascara Mascara
  • No Lipstick Lipstick

Perricone MD No Makeup Skincare02a

Perricone MD’s No Foundation Foundation ($55/ 1 ounce) is a lightweight, creamy liquid foundation that applies in a single layer for light coverage with a dewy finish. At first, some readers may find the coverage too light compared to typical foundations or BB cremes. My sense is that, with continual use, your skin will improve with the use of this and other skincare products, so that less coverage will be needed. Nonetheless, the No Foundation Foundation can be easily layered and built without caking or looking heavy. Indeed, this product is ideal for those who do not like heavy feeling products on the fact, or those who may have imperfections, slight wrinkles or the like because the lightweight, non-caking texture does not emphasize flaws. As the line is designed for those with aging skin, this is ideal. Heavy-textured foundation is rarely desirable for skin of any age. I try to use the lightest coverage that I can get away with, and concealers as necessary. For this No Foundation Foundation, the key skincare ingredients are Alpha Lipoic Acid (designed to minimize wrinkles and pores while delivering powerful antioxidant protection, and Vitamin C to correct discoloration). The product also includes non-chemical SPF30 based on titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, claiming protection from both UVA and UVB rays.

Perricone MD No Makeup Skincare15

The product comes in two shades. The lighter #1 was a pretty good match for my MAC NC15/Chanel Ivoire skin tone. I would guesstimate that #2 runs at about an NC30-35. The products can be mixed to target shades in between. The Perricone MD No Bronzer Bronzer can be used to deepen the shade range higher than NC35. The products are dispensed through a pump.

Perricone Foundation pump1

Overall, I liked Perricone MD’s No Foundation Foundation. The product does have a dewy finish which does look lovely when first applied and those with drier skin will appreciate. Because my forehead gets oily throughout the day, I tended to powder this down on my forehead area, and left the other areas with a pretty sheen. Here is the ingredient list (click to enlarge):

Perricone Foundation No 12
Between this product and the Perricone MD No Foundation Serum, I found that they worked well together. On some days, I tried layering, and other others I mixed the two to get a lighter color match. Either way, they were a nice combination. If I were to be forced to commit to only one (arghhh!), I’d go with the serum because I prefer a more matte finish, and in my subjective opinion I loved the way that the serum felt on my skin. Also, the serum seemed to camouflage my pores into invisibility, really. I’m including swatches of all shades here, including Perricone MD No Foundation Foundation Serum:

Perricone MD No Makeup Skincare19I did a quick finger-blend of the swatches, above, without being very precise or careful. On the skin, a proper blending job delivers smooth and lovely results.

Perricone MD No Makeup Skincare21Overall, I really liked Perricone MD’s No Foundation Foundation. I love the way that I could mix the products to sculpt areas of my face, mix with the bronzer, and loved the all-day, highly buildable coverage. Other products from this line are reviewed here and here.

Introducing Perricone MD No Makeup Skincare: No Foundation Foundation Serum

Perricone MD No Makeup Skincare14aPerricone MD has a full line of No Makeup Skincare: A Revolutionary Approach to Color that provides “good for you” benefits together with foolproof and versatile application.  Although I was aware of some of these products, I was impressed to see an entire lineup that, because of its liquid format, can be mixed and blended to create naturally beautiful looks. Here is the entire line (click to enlarge):

Perricone MD No Makeup Skincare01The fundamental thread that goes through the entire line of products is anti-aging skincare, to repair, restore, and to ensure that the overall look is youthful. In addition to antioxidants, DMAE, and neuropeptides, the line is formulated with high pigment that sits lightly on the skin, which can be built up, sculpted, modified, mixed and blended to achieve a look that is healthy, natural, and with a youthful look.

As an overview, I loved several of these products. However, I loved, loved, loved the products together as a set.  First, I was shocked at how quickly I could do a face with this set. They are designed for very intuitive application. Although it is easy to layer them up to increase coverage, it seems impossible to over-do them. • No Foundation Foundation (2 shades)
  • No Bronzer Bronzer
  • No Blush Blush
  • No Concealer Concealer
  • No Mascara Mascara
  • No Lipstick Lipstick

Perricone Foundation Serum1There were a few products that were true standouts. For me, the Perricone MD No Foundation Foundation Serum ($55) was amazing. It has a similar texture to the Giorgio Armani Maestro Fusion Foundation, lightweight, layerable and very long-lasting (surprisingly so, this foundation didn’t move even on the longest days). This is available at Sephora and Perricone MD’s website.

Perricone MD No Makeup Skincare03b

It has the most gorgeous, suede-matte texture. My pores disappeared. My face looked firmer and perfected. This still looked this good more than ten hours after application.

Perricone MD No Makeup Skincare04

I applied an extra layer or two to problem areas. The color is a touch on the darker side for my MAC NC15/Chanel Ivoire skin tone. In order to use the product, I put a good layer on my skin so that I could soak in the product’s anti-aging neuropeptides (to create suppleness and firmness), Vitamin C (to discolorations) and Alpha Lipoic Acid (to minimize wrinkles and pores).  Then I mixed this serum foundation with Perricone MD’s No Foundation Foundation in shade #1 (the lightest shade) to create a shade that matches the rest of me. The serum can be mixed with the Perricone MD No Bronzer Bronzer to deepen its color. Like the Armani, the Perricone MD uses a dropper as the applicator.

Perricone MD No Makeup Skincare17

The product is rated at SPF 30 (according to Perricone MD’s website, the No Foundation Foundation Serum includes a “non-chemical, mineral-based SPF 30 with Zinc oxide to protect from UVA and UVB rays” Here is the ingredient list (click to enlarge):

Perricone Foundation Serum2  I’m including swatches of all shades here, including Perricone MD No Foundation Foundation Serum:

Perricone MD No Makeup Skincare21Overall, I loved the look and feel of Perricone MD’s No Foundation Foundation Serum. In addition to the lovely texture and buildable coverage, the product’s skincare benefits was conferring some benefits throughout the day. Additional products from this line are available here and here.

Perricone MD Cold Plasma8

When I was packing for a few weeks in Paris, I was panicked over which skin care to bring. Travel can be hard on my skin–the long, dehydrating plane trip, time in the sun, new foods, and unpredictability.  I delayed packing my skincare products until the very last minute, absolutely unable to decide what to bring. I tweeted for help, and was answered with some very good, practical advice from one of my favorite skincare experts, at The Black Panties. She suggested one cleanser, two toners, two serums, and two moisturizers (and, of course, sunscreen).  To anyone but a beauty lover, the is probably enough skin care for a year. For me, this seems a sensible amount.

Perricone MD Cold Plasma9

One of the items I chose was Perricone MD Cold Plasma ($155/ 1 oz.).  I applied this every night for the full three weeks, and was really impressed. My pores looked better, my skin seemed plumper, more moisturized, and it looked younger and more refreshed. My skin glowed every morning after I removed it.

Perricone MD Cold Plasma4

When I was very  young and my skin was great, I had no need of anything like Perricone MD Cold Plasma. If your skin is perfect, you won’t need it either. But if you do wish your skin had more life, more firmness, and more glow, it is definitely worth a good look.

Perricone MD Acyl Serum08

One new release in the skincare world is Perricone MD’s Acyl-Glutathione Deep Crease Serum ($155/ 1 oz.). This is a multi-tasking anti-aging treatment. One of its best features if the ability to soften fine lines

Perricone MD Acyl Serum14

This is a gently scented spot treatment that is to be applied to expression lines, lines, and creases. This is recommended for the “11” that sometimes appear between the eyebrows, across the forehead, in the contours of the mouth (marionette lines), and anywhere else that lines are starting to form. Essentially, the product includes a derivative of Acyl-Glutathione which is intended to replace ingredients in the skin that tend to dissipate with age. For those versed in chemistry, here is one of the Perricone patent applications that describes the technology and the effects.

Perricone MD Acyl Serum13

The product is intended to gives an immediate smoothing effect to fine lines and lessen creases. Once again, Perricone MD has delivered. I found that the product was effective even on the first application.  I’d really like to avoid using  needles as long as possible, thank you very much. This serum works to soften expression lines and creases caused by facial movements and age. Unlike Botox, this product is not intended to be invasive–you still have full muscle control of course.

Perricone MD Acyl Serum04

The first time that I used the product, I found how quickly and completely the Perricone MD’s Acyl-Glutathione Deep Crease Serum does work. The results were truly visible. I applied this serum on some of the fine lines that traverse my forehead, and after about ten minutes they had smoothed to nothing. One area that looks like it’s on its way to a crease was far smoother and less deep. It also took care of some “11’s” that I’d developed from squinting at my computer all day. Excellent.

Perricone Pump

I’ve never had a moisturizer deliver results even close to Perricone MD’s Acyl-Glutathione Deep Crease Serum. When I used the product twice a day as suggested, the results continue to work. Ingredients (click to enlarge):

Perricone MD Acyl Serum05

Users should keep in mind this serum is not a moisturizer, and that it can be layered with outer Perricone MD products. For example, I’ll layer this with my favorite Perricone eye treatments, including the Perricone MD Acyl-Glutathione Eye Lid Serum together with Perricone MD Vitamin C Ester and a moisturizer on my face.

Perricone MD Acyl Serum09

Overall:  Great product that truly delivered for me. Bravo Perricone!

Perricone Eye Cocktail abc1a

Perricone MD’s Acly-Glutathione Eye Lid Serum ($115/ 0.5 oz.) is designed to tighten and firm the eye area, to brighten dark circles and redness, smooth creases, and to act as a makeup primer. This is sold at Nordstrom, Sephora, Perricone MD and other retailers.

Perricone Eye Cocktail abc4

I’ve been using Acyl-Glutathione for the past several weeks and really like it. It gives me an instant lift, both above the eye and a flattening/lifting effect on the undereye area. The first few times I used it, I could literally feel my eye area tightening.

Perricone Eye Cocktail1

I found that Perricone MD’s Aycl-Glutathione Eye Lid Serum did give me a visible lift that I could actually feel. The effect seems to last all day, and it is cumulative. So, using the serum day-after-day gives me the best effect. Since researching this product, I’ve learned that many of Perricone MD products can be layered for a skin care cocktail. Taking this cue, I’ve used is the Perricone MD Acyl-Glutathione combed with Perricone MD Advanced Eye Therapy ($98). The combination seems to knock several years off in just a few minutes. It’s subtle, but definitely noticeable. It hasn’t completely eliminated every single fine line. In the short term, this combination certainly softens, flattens the under eye area, eliminates some lines, and lifts the entire eye area. Note that the combination is designed for long-term effect, so I’ll be interested to see whether the results get even better.

Here is the ingredient list (click to enlarge):

Perricone Eye Cocktail abc2

I think that Perricone MD has delved into the science of anti-aging. I’m working my way through some of Dr. Perricone’s books, and his knowledge of youthfulness at the cellular level is impressive and credible. The way that he has modified the raw ingredients to ensure that they are of maximum effect when applied on the skin is one of the reasons that I think this is an effective anti-aging skincare line. For its part, Perricone MD Acyl-Glutathione Eye Lid Serum works well for both under the eye, as well as on the lid, to help keep the eye area looking fresh.

It’s been quite a year here at Cafe Makeup! We’ve had a huge year–we passed our 3rd blog birthday and we’re very thankful for our amazing readers.

As you might now, we’ve both had a very busy year off the blog as well. Between Amy’s travel schedule (she was on the road almost continuously from June through November), and Liz’s busy work schedule, we’re so pleased that we’ve been able to keep our love of beauty alive on the blog now that we’re reached December 31st. We’ve had a lot of help along the way. Cafe Makeup would like to do a special “thank you” to Sabrina at The Beauty Look Book (her Best of 2012 is here). She’s been so wonderful and and encouraging throughout the entire year. I’d also like to thank all of the lovely readers and other beauty bloggers who’ve kept us alive by linking, retweeting and continuing our beauty conversations. You might also wish to explore The Non Blonde’s Top Products of 2012–I really respect her taste.

To celebrate the year’s end, we’d like to raise a glass of champagne to our readers! As we sip, we’re going to go through our Top Ten Products of 2012.  As you know, we’ve seen many things throughout the year. Here’s a feature which tells you which ones won our hearts, which ones we still depend on, and are truly the very Top Shelf Products of the Year 2012.

1. Tom Ford Blushes: Although released in 2011, I’ve come to love the high quality, beautiful glow of these blushes. As an aside, the brush is incredible as well. The original review is here.

Tom Ford Blush02

2.  Giorgio Armani Maestro Concealer: I can’t believed that a concealer made my top 10 list, but there it is. This is truly an androgynous product–appropriate regardless of gender. I originally bought this on a whim. Over time, I’ve become dependent on the extremely high quality, great coverage, incredibly natural look, and skin care benefits (it contains ingredients to breaks up sun damage and dark spots). The application is incredibly natural–sometimes I cover few spots and under eyes, and skip foundation entirely. This makes this a truly travel-friendly product, as you can leave your liquid foundation at home. The original review is here, I’ve since switched to buying shade #3.

GA concealer

3. Perricone MD Skin Care: I’ve been working on my skin with intensity since February. Last week, I got a few random compliments from strangers–“your skin looks beautiful–what are you using?” As a beauty blogger, I’ve been using several different things, but I’ve added a healthy dose of Perricone MD. My favorites so far are the Perricone MD Vitamin C Ester 15, the Blue Plasma Peel and the Formula 15 serum. Although I haven’t reviewed it yet, the Perricone Face Finishing Moisturizer appears to have some magical ingredients in it as well.

Perricone

4. 2012 was the year of the BB Cream:  Over the past several months, the term “BB Cream” has entered the beauty vernacular with a vengeance. Although originating overseas with formulas that combine anti-aging, skincare benefits, and sunscreen, in the U.S. some formulas are said to be nothing more than glorified tinted moisturizers. However, there are some that stand above the crowd. Cafe Makeup’s former favorite was Dior DiorSnow BB Cream, a remarkably stable version with serious sun protection(SPF 50) and all-day tenacity (even in the Florida summer humidity).

omorovicza bb cream

The Dior would still be my favorite, except that I was recently sent the Omorovicza Complexion Perfector BB Cream (SPF 20) by the company. I’ll be doing a review soon, but this creamy, light foundation is absolutely perfect is so many ways.

The most startling effect is that my skin looks improved after I remove it at the end of the day. To my eye, it’s noticeable. In 2013, we can expect to see “CC Creams,” which are next-generation products (including one from Chanel). A few have started to land at drugstores, according to Nouveau Cheap. Those new products will have some very stiff competition from Omorovicza’s Complexion Perfector.

5. Tom Ford Enchanted Eye Quad. This one makes me hear angels sing. The original review is here.

Tom Ford Enchanted Quad03

6. Chanel Rouge Allure Luminous Intense Lipsticks.  Why should the MAC lovers have all the fun? These are intensely pigmented lipsticks that provide gorgeous coverage with a very thin layer of product. The colors are outstanding–complex, intense, original, sophisticated, and very beautiful. I’ve purchased several, and am eyeing several colors from the Spring 2013 collection (I’ve caved on one already). Swatches of all colors are here (except for the Spring 2013, which were just released).

Chanel Lipsticks new1a

7. Nars Andy Warhol Collection. This highly original collection melded fine art and beauty. This included an incredibly rich and thoughtful array of choices, with something for everyone. I certainly found some favorites among them, including the Flowers palettes with the incredible taupe. At the same time, the collection helped us relive just a touch of the 1960’s makeup era just as Marc Jacobs made it fashionable for clothing. I’ve read that Francois Nars plans to do another artists collaboration next year, and I’m certainly hopeful that he will. Regardless of whether you purchased anything from the collection, this one warrants serious recognition for its attention to detail and creativity, as well as its sweeping scope.

Warhol Portrait 1

8. Le Metier de Beaute CHEM60 Pro-Peel and GLOW10ai Mask Set. Applause for giving busy women truly ingenious results at home. I love this set. The original post is here.

Le Metier Peel 10

9. Dior Nail Polish. There is something about Dior that has been excelling in the nail polish realm lately. Yes, I loved OPI’s Skyfall collection–the colors are fast, fun, and highly affordable. I got a 4-5 of them, and still wear them. Can you think of a Fall on-trend color that wasn’t part of Skyfall? I sure can’t.

Skyfall

Still, Dior’s formula spreads like butter, levels off beautifully, and has a helpful, manageable brush. Unlike OPI’s Skyfall, Dior has been truly cutting edge in its color development this year. Rather than capturing trends, Dior is setting them. I have to love an imaginative industry leader.

Dior Mango Pasteque Lime2

10. Guerlain This traditional French company has done so many things right this year. From its beautiful summer Terracotta Pucci collection, the new Petit Robe Noir perfume, and the development of new formulas of lipsticks. Liz and I both love the new Guerlain Rouge G L’Extrait Lip Color (the review for Paresse is here). I’d love to include more Guerlain in this list, if I could.

Guerlain Extrait Paresse04

Thank you for another wonderful year in beauty, Gorgeous!  And cheers!

What were your favorite products for 2012? We’d love to know!

Perricone Hair and Nail1

As you likely know, Perricone MD offers a line of health and beauty supplements, including the Perricone MD Hair and Nails Formula ($95/ 30 day supply). Inside, the supplements are packaged in individual sleeves that ensure that you take them in the correct order.

Perricone Vitamins1a

The supplements are designed to offer high-quality, effective ingredients. Perricone MD outlines the benefits as offering “the essential building blocks for hair and nail health,” namely:

Biotin, an essential nutrient that plays an important role in the formation of keratin to support healthy, strong nails
– High levels of antioxidants to protect hair and nails from environmental damage
– Dr. Perricone’s exclusive Forever Young blend of extracts (watercress, dark cocoa, chili pepper, turmeric, and more) with a high level of antioxidant protection
Omega 3’s sourced from wild Alaskan sockeye salmon for overall health and radiance

I have to admit that I’m a strong believer that beauty starts from the inside. When I’m eating correctly, exercising, hydrating properly, everything else falls into place. There are a thousand different reasons that I start a supplement regimen and then stop. My main goal is overall health, but of course some beauty benefits are a nice plus!

Perricone Hair and Nail4a

In the past, I’ve taken biotin and omega 3 supplements, but I’m never quite sure that I’m taking the correct amount, or whether the quality of the supplements that I’ve purchased is adequate. Also, if I suffer a breakout or an upset tummy, I’m never certain whether to blame the supplements. I’ve wandered a few health food store aisles wondering if I should buy the refrigerated Omega 3’s, or the shelf brands are perfectly fine. Basically, there are very few ways for me to tell which ones are worth taking.

Perricone Hair and Nail3a

To me, the best features of Perricone MD vitamins is the trust factor, the lack of any noticeable adverse side effects (no breakouts, no upset tummy at all), and the convenience factor that facilitates following the program. The trust factor is the  most important to me–I’ve been reading Dr. Perricone’s Forever Young: The Science of Nutrigenomics for Glowing, Wrinkle-Free Skin and Radiant Health at Every Age, and his email advice (also reproduced here on his blog) and his advice is really spot-on for me. He holds several patents, and has a scientific justification for his products. The passion for the science of beauty wins me over every time.

I finished my 30 day supply without skipping a day despite racking up over 10,000 airline miles during the same period. I was able to place enough of these sleeves in a carry-on pocket for the lengths of my journey, which took minimal space and eliminated any bulky bottle-rattling and without any need for refrigeration.

I usually took these after a meal, with a glass of water as suggested by Dr. Perricone on the packaging. As an aside, the packages are marked “1,” “2,” and “3” to designed the suggested order that you take them. On my crises days, sometimes I realized that I was taking them out of order (oops!) but didn’t notice any difference. Here are the product details (click to enlarge):

Supplements are a long-term commitment, and I didn’t expect miracles in 30 days. I notice that my nails are softer and moisturized, and my skin is looking vibrant. I’m not sure how much is attributable to the supplements, as I’m testing out skincare frequently these days. As I finished this box, I contemplated a replacement. Because I loved the convenience factor and because my goal is overall health, I’ve purchased Perricone MD Skin and Total Body Supplements which appears to be a more comprehensive program. I purchased it during a Friends and Family promotion on the site–you might wish to register your email with the site, because there are large samples and auto-ship discounts that pop up with some regularity.

Overall, I was pleased and impressed with the ease, convenience, and overall quality of Perricone MD Hair & Nails Formula, so much so that I’m excited to try other supplements in the line. If you are thinking of starting a New Year’s regimen, these are definitely worth a look.

Perricone Blue Plasma1

Perricone MD has just released Blue Plasma ($95 / 2 oz.), an incredibly gentle exfoliant that is designed for daily use. I’m a major fan of frequent exfoliation. Nothing reveals and renews skin like taking the dead layer off, to let the new skin show through. Sometimes I will use AHA chemical exfoliants, and sometimes other types of at-home peels (for example, this one from Le Metier de Beaute is an exceptional twice-per-week peel). I’m also going to take the opportunity to compare it to some other daily peels that I’ve tried recently.

Blue Plasma is a once-per-day lotion that had a beautiful, gentle exfoliating effect and I experienced absolutely zero stinging. If you are looking for an effective peel for sensitive skin, or one that treats your skin like a princess’, then Blue Plasma is for you. The Perricone MD website reads:

This cutting edge liquid treatment works with Bio-specific Peeling to attack only dead skin cells, Micro-extraction to lift surface debris, unclogging and purifying the skin of build-up and finally Hydro-fusion to rebalance skin’s hydration with enriched water. No rinsing needed. Apply and follow with your daily skincare regimen.

I did find the results effective. My skin was softer, brighter, smoother, and more alive. Particularly for winter-wearing skin, it’s lovely to have my glowing skin back without damaging or peeling. I typically put it on first, then wait for a few minutes to apply my moisturizer, then sunscreen. It can also be used before bed in the evenings instead.

As an introductory offer, Perricone MD’s website is running an auto-ship special which reduces the price of the product to $85.50 plus adds a free Citrus Facial Wash with every order.

Blue Plasma Special

Auto-ships from Perricone MD are less scary than they sound. I’ve done an auto-ship special with the Perricone MD Vitamin C Ester 15, and found that I was able to pace the shipments to my needs simply by calling (my shipments arrive every three months, instead of every month, and still get the lower price and freebie product for every shipment).

As an aside, I preferred Perricone MD to Bare Escentuals Intensive Glow Pads Brightening Treatment ($35 for 60 pads).

Bare Escentials Intensive Glow Pads

The Glow Pads are cotton pads (one side smooth, the other rough) that are soaked in AHA and other items, designed to combine manual and chemical exfoliation.  I found that these were fine, they were certainly easy and they packed well. The container is a strong plastic, and they aren’t–strictly speaking–a liquid so they were convenient when baggie space couldn’t accommodate all the skin care that I wanted to bring. Overall, Perricone MD is far more gentle, and left me with more side benefits (softer, hydrated skin). Also, Perricone MD’s Blue Plasma doesn’t make my skin more sun-sensitive.

I did feel a stinging quality on using the Intensive Glow Pads. Generally, with this type of cotton-soaked pad product you’ll want to be diligent about flipping the jar after every use so that the pads don’t dry out. For an AHA product, I still prefer M2, the advanced formulation of the old Mama Lotion. With a bottle of M2, you don’t have to worry about any pads drying out, and you get plenty of product for the price (one bottle seems to last forever).

One product that I became very curious about for daily exfoliation was fresh lemon juice.  I’ve never seen Makeupalley review a skincare product at a 92% approval rating before, so I had to try it. All I can say is, harsh harsh harsh, at least for me.  If you heard someone shouting in pain, that was me. I’ve heard warnings about using this, including making skin go off-balance, or uneven skin tone after using it. I certainly would dilute it significantly the first time.

Of all of these options, Perricone MD’s Blue Plasma is by far my favorite. Together with my other Perricone MD products, my skin is vastly improved. In particular, the Blue Plasma gives me a gentle, daily exfoliation which leaves my skin looking younger, fresher, and with a beautiful luminous quality.  In fact, some day’s I’ll wear the Giorgio Armani Maestro Concealer over a few problem areas and no foundation. To me, that’s a priceless result.

Nov 072012

I’ve been living out of suitcases for a while now, trying to balance my beauty goods on the corner of tiny bathroom ledges and stock up on travel sized luxuries. I thought I’d do a quick “Loving Right Now” for a few items that are making life on the road a little easier. I’m really looking forward to the end of the project in a few weeks so that I can cocoon at home and spread out.

1. Travel sized Caudalie Divine Oil ($18/Sephora) and L’Occitane Eau Essentielle Immortelle  mini-spray ($13ish). The full review of this mini-travel Caudalie Divine Oil is here, one of my discoveries in Paris this summer. How delightful that our local Sephora stores carry this wonderful, moisturizing oil in a travel size. I keep one in my desk at work as well, to moisturize my hands and nails throughout the day.

I occasionally stop by any nearby L’Occitane boutique and ask them whether they have any tiny sprays.  Usually, they have a stock of them in the back, former limited editions that haven’t sold out yet. These are wonderful for bringing on flights to add moisture mid-flight. The types of waters and toners varies by season, so do ask. These little in-flight luxuries make those delays much nicer. By the way, this Eau Essentielle Immortelle is a wonderfully moisturizing spray for the dry winter air.

 2. Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger Moisturizing Lather Shampoo and Paul Mitchell Wild Ginger Keratin Intensive Treatment (roughly $20 each on Amazon.com and salons). I know, Paul Mitchell–it’s been years since I’ve thought anything in the line was worth exploring. Hear me out.

My salon gave me a Wild Ginger treatment, which is a professional treatment. My hair was remarkably softer and smoother, and the stylist suggested that I maintain the look with the Wild Ginger Shampoo and Keratin Intensive Treatment. They are fabulous! They really leave my hair much more moisturized, softer and smoother than my more expensive home cleansers and treatments. They smell gingery too–very pleasant! Even though it was weeks since my in-salon treatment, I found these two products were worth checking out.

3. Perricone MD Formula 15 Serum  ($125). The original review for this product is here. That same evening that I published the review of the bottle sent by Perricone MD without charge to me, my bottle took a dive off of my tiny hotel bathroom ledge. Hysteria ensued. Now I’ve purchased my own. Awesome treatment for tightening, lifting, and generally youth-ifying. I love this and wish they made it in a great big bucket.  A plastic one.
