Sephora Gel Concealer 2

Sephora Bright Future Gel Serum Concealer ($14) was an unexpected miss for me. I’m usually a careful buyer, although I’ve had occasional problems when buying sight unseen. This was one, unfortunately.

As background, this concealer is a liquid gel, with a doe foot applicator that is said to have brightening properties and that is perfect for the sensitive undereye area (it is infused with pineapple ceramide, promoted to improve skin texture and promote brightness). I ordered in the shade Buttercream #4 (light with a neutral undertone). I found this shade far too light for my NC15/ Chanel Ivoire skin tone. In fact, I’ll say this is unwearably light for my fair, warm skintone. Obviously, I should have purchased this in person.  Just keep in mind, if you are thinking of ordering online, maybe don’t do that.

The texture of the concealer is, indeed, quite lightweight and pigmented. Unfortunately, I had problems with the longevity. It seems to migrate and move on my undereye area. Perhaps your experience will be different, and this is just my opinion and experience, but I found  it difficult to get more than a few hours wear before I needed to touch up.

Sephora Concealer 1

I wish I had better news on this.  As with all reviews, your mileage may vary. Color issue aside, the coverage was quite good. The concealer didn’t seem to have any moisturizing properties, if anything it seem ever-so-slightly drying. I didn’t find that this gave me the all day wear that I was hoping to get. I far prefer the Guerlain Precious Light, Burberry Sheer Luminous #2, Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer (Custard), and Marc Jacobs Beauty Remedy Concealer Pen (Wake Up Call #2), among others.

Sephora Bright Future Gel Serum Concealer is available at Sephora (affilate link).

Shu Hair 5

If you color your hair (including you, if you have highlights!), you already know that keeping it in excellent condition is a challenge. Coloring can be harsh, even if one goes to excellent salons. Shu Uemura’s Art of Hair Color Lustre’s series is targeted to preserve color, deliver shine, and protect the hair from damage. I’ve been using the Color Lustre Sulfate-Free Brilliant Glaze Shampoo and Color Lustre Brilliant Glaze Conditioner for the past few weeks, and have experienced a noticeable improvement in shine, bounce, softness and smoothness. What’s not to love?

Shu Uemura’s Sulfate Free Brilliant Glaze Shampoo (10 oz. $48) is a lightweight, pearly liquid that cleans hair perfectly while leaving it soft and shiny. My hair felt clean, but never dry or stripped. It’s rare to find a shampoo that strikes this balance just right, and is also kind to color. I experienced no color fading. In fact, my color looked better than ever because the condition of my hair improved significantly.

This shampoo includes Musk Rose Oil, which has healing and nourishing properties. It also has Goji Berry Extract (a source of anti-oxidants) to protect color.

The shampoo has a subdued scent with the following notes:

FRAGRANCE: Rose of Japan
TOP NOTE: Mandarin, Grapefruit, Black-Currant, Cardamon Essence
HEART NOTE: Rose, Freesia, Violet
BASE NOTE: Sandalwood, Musk, Vanilla

She Uemura’s Color Lustre Brilliant Glaze Conditioner (8 oz./$58) surprised me. This conditioner feels lightweight and non-greasy. Usually light conditioners isn’t really effective for me.  However, The Brilliant Glaze conditioner absorbed very easily and really delivered soft, shiny, healthy hair.  This conditioner is worthy of the premium name.

Like the shampoo, Shu’s Color Lustre adds Musk Rose Oil and Goji Berry Extract. The scent was quite similar to the shampoo. For both, I found that the scent didn’t last far beyond the treatment time and did not clash with my perfume. Overall, big love for both of these. It’s wonderful to see that Shu Uemura’s Art of Hair delivers so beautifully.  Highly recommended.

LM Flawless Skin Moisturizer 2

Laura Mercier Infusion de Rose Moisturizing Cream ($68) is a remarkably effective, lightweight moisturizing cream that I recommend for those with combination to dry skin.  I’ve used many moisturizers, from the French pharmacy lines, various high end brands including Chanel Sublimage. In my view, Laura Mercier’s delivers quality that far exceeds its price. This particular version, infused with a rose scent, delivers glowing, fresh-looking skin, while feeling very pleasant (and not at all heavy).

LM Flawless Finish 6

The moisturizer is remarkable for being both effective and lightweight. This is especially effective at allowing my skin to recover from stress. The scent is sophisticated and calming. I just adore it. It’s one of those Sunday-afternoon facial products that makes you feel very pampered, or one that I apply at night that allows my skin to look refreshed in the morning. It’s been delivering excellent results.

LM Flawless Finish 4

Laura Mercier Infusion de Rose Nourishing Creme is available at Laura Mercier online, Nordstrom, Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, and Bloomingdales.

Tom-Ford-Bicoastal

I picked up two items from Tom Ford Summer this year–first, a refill of Tom Ford Gold Dust Bronzer ($98) as a replacement for one that I’ve used to pan. But the new item that created the most excitement is Tom Ford Bicoastal Blush ($78). I find this formula, which echoes the same from the Moonlight Sculpting duo, to be excellent. As others have warned, I’m sure that Tom Ford Bicoastal will sell out quickly. Please move quickly.

tom-Ford-Bicoastal-13_edited-1

Tom Ford Bicoastal is currently available at Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Sephora (this goes in and out of stock here).

Tom Ford Bicoastal includes a highly pigmented deep pink-red blush that applies with virtually no powdery texture. It melds beautifully to the skin to delivery a soft healthy glowing color. As its name suggests, there is an additional soft pink highlight shade included that provides a highly sophisticated cool shimmer. I absolutely adore Bicoastal–to me, this is going to make a top ten list of 2016. The soft glowing look that it imparts gives life and youth, and these are beautiful colors that are face-brigtening to an entire range of skin tones. Yes, you need this one.

Of course, I’m a big fan of Tom Ford Gold Dust as well. Liz has worn this in countless photographs on this blog, and in her real life. I find myself reaching for Gold Dust on my high-stress days, when I know I want to look cool, confident, and softly tanned. I love it.

Tom-Ford-Gold-Dust-1

I’ll look at Tom Ford Summer at least one more time before I decide whether I’ve gotten everything that I love from it. However, I knew that Bicoastal blush was a must-have, given my love for this incredible texture. This is well worth your attention. Please do not hesitate on this one–it’s beautiful.

MAC Future Collection - 15

As I transition back into more active blogging, I thought it might be useful to do a (very) quick overview of my picks from the recent Future MAC and MAC Mineralize collections. Both are focused on skin-enhancing textures. I focused my dollars on the powder products.

These collections are currently available at Nordstrom, (Future and Mineralize) Bloomingdales, Macy’s, and Dillards.

MAC Future Collection - 13

Otherearthly is the most striking highlighter. Although intimidating, it’s actually sort of fun to use and creates a high-shine metallic light peach-rose gold finish. The look is pure MAC–bold, not a subtle sheen. There’s definitely a surprise factor with Otherearthly–depending on where you place your brush, you’ll get a different look. The two outer shades are rather smooth. The silver (not an overspray! It’s really silver!) doesn’t have a super-smooth texture. But you really can’t expect that (it’s a chunk of silver, hey!). And once the shades are blended together, the look is pretty spectacular. The swatches compare Otherearthly’s individual shades, mixed and swatch of Nuanced Mineralized Skinfinish (part of the Mineralized collection).

Mac Mineralized Swatches - 21

The new MAC Mineralized collection gives us five new options in a “pinwheel” format. These were a pure joy to work with–they’re creamy and with the four quarters, there’s a surprise factor that’s just absolutely fun.  I chose three:

  • Faintly Fabulous has a yellow color-correcting shade that can be used to brighten the undereye area. This gives a glowing light highlighter effect when all of the shades are mixed together that leans toward pinky-gold. I was surprised that the final mixed version wasn’t very yellow at all.
  • Nuanced is the most metallic and shimmery of these three. It gives a lovely gold-pink shade that’s just gorgeous. On my NC15 skintone, it can be used as a subtle high-shimmer blush.
  • Perfectly Lit is my favorite mistake. Technically, it’s too deep for my skintone and could never, ever be a highlight on me. It’s a gingery-shimmer orb of goodness that I have to apply very lightly as a high-shimmer blush.  If you look good in gingery deep shades, you might love this one.

All three had an excellent smooth formula. These deserve a lot of love if you are a mineralized skin finish fan.

MAC Warm Rose Mineralized Skinfinish is perhaps the most puzzling product of the lot.  It reminded me of Chanel’s Poudre Douce in Rosee that was discontinued in the U.S. some years ago. The Chanel allover face powder looks slightly cool pink when applied to my NC15/Cameo/Ivoire skintone. When certain kinds of light hit it, the Chanel powder gives a slight, soft pearly effect that’s just gorgeous. MAC Warm Rose has a similar quality, but it is not quite as pronounced. Indeed, the effect is so subtle that depending on the color/tone/texture of your skin, and the lighting, you might not see the effect at all. In that case, Warm Rose amounts to the most subtle highlighter on the face of the planet (truly, it’s more subtle than the Hourglass Ambient Light Powders). There will be a narrow class of people who might love Warm Rose. For others, it’s going to be best to skip. Warm, deep skin tones might find it looking ashy, and others may find it completely invisible.

MAC Future Collection - 17

MAC Future Collection - 18

There are two limited edition blushes with Future MAC–the soft pink/peach Ray Beam and the light nude Cosmic Force. The texture of both is satin-matte, and the formula is a creamy powder. These are both well done, but probably not must-haves.

Ray Beam is pretty, and I’ll get a lot of use out of it. It reminds me a little of Chanel Espeigel, but without the soft Chanel glow. MAC’s Ray Beam is softly pigmented, and it compliments Othereartly and Nuanced nicely.  In other words, it fits in nicely with the overall collection.

Cosmic Ray, a soft nude, was a miss for me. Although for some it would be a good contour shade, it didn’t have the complexity or depth that I was hoping for. My mistake was comparing it to Chanel Mocha, which has a deep mauve base note that looks amazing with Chanel Rosee (they always discontinue the nice ones). I’m including swatches so you can make up your own mind.

Mac Cosmic Force Ray - 1

Whew! So overall, I’d look at Otherearthly because that’s the most unusual star product out of this collection. I wish they’d made  pink and alternative nude versions of it. MAC Warm Rose is going to be a love-it or hate-it product (or a big “nothing-burger with nothing on the side” for some). The Mineralized “pinwheels” are worth your time–choose according to your skin tone. The blushes are well-formulated, the question is going to be whether these are colors that you are looking for.

I’ve heard good things about the lip products in this collection, but I had to draw the line somewhere. With the Sephora sale going on, and Tom Ford Bicoastal in stock, tough choices have to be made.

MAC Future and the new Mineralized collections are currently available at Nordstrom, (Future and Mineralize) Bloomingdales, Macy’s, and Dillards.

Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Collection

I haven’t gotten deeply into Tarte’s line, aside from panning a Park Avenue Princess a few years ago (no regrets!). A few weeks ago, distracted amidst an in extremis deadline, I found myself drawn to the release of the Tarte Chicken Rainforest of the Sea Collection for no particular reason. A few of the products were surprisingly good, and others worth writing about in case you are thinking about them. I believe that these products are only available on Sephora and Tarte online at present.

Tarte Twinkle Palette 1

Tarte’s Rainforest of the Sea Skin Twinkle Highlighter palette was the winner. Although I’m biased and falling in love with all highlighter’s lately, let em tell you about this one. There are two giant pans of a gel-powder (the left is warm, the right is slightly rose). Applied with a fan brush, these are absolutely gorgeous reflective beauties without the dreaded glitter. They’re remarkably smooth, easy to work with and given their giant size, I’m hoping I never run out. These two Tarte pretties are a touch more subtle than Becca Champagne Pop and the other extreme shiners we’ve seen over the past year. Yet it’s not at all shy–the reflectivity is really there, and I’m loving it.

Tarte Skin Twinkle 5

The middle shade is a matte yellow powder that must be ignored. Inexplicably, it’s a hard pan of nothing that’s sitting between two elegant  powders that will give you the upper cheekbones of an angel. This is packaged in a very slim, packable metal with a full-size mirror in the lid (no brush).

Tarte Skin Twinkle 2 swatches

I bought the Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Quench & Drench Lip Set ($9). This is a set with two mini lipsticks–the lightweight mint-flavored Quench formula in Nude ($19 for full size), and the creamy Drench in Cabana Boy ($22 for full size, available separately).

I became addicted to the Nude Quench shade–it’s super moisturizing and mint-tingly.  Unfortunately, it’s packaged in cardboard and the formula is so soft it broke easily.  It is lovely, super wearable and gives a pretty nude glow. But it might be better in a pot.  The Drench Cabana Boy is a nice near-opaque shade in a somewhat moisturizing formula.

Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Eyeshadow 2

Tarte RFOTS Eyeshadow 1

I had high hopes for the Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Eyeshadow Palette ($34). Who doesn’t love a neutral palette with the look of a shimmery metal, and a few good mattes? The palette is certainly nice, and provides countless options, for its price range. But I don’t believe that that higher-end palettes have much to worry about. That said, I found the shadows consistent–all were good, none were duds. But none were complete standouts, except maybe the taupe called “Wave.” All had excellent blendability.

tarte rainforest of the sea

TARTE RFOTS Eyeshadow 9

To some degree, I’m glad that Tarte packaged this collection in metal, not cardboard. This is especially true for Skin Twinkle, as gel formulas are fragile. But for this eyeshadow palette, the metal adds a lot of weight. It gives the product a nice heavy, substantial feeling. But the weight takes away from the travel-friendly quality that other palettes have

I should note that I’ve sampled the Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Foundation in Fair-Light ($39/1 ounce). After wearing it for a few days, I’ve placed the full-sized version in my cart. It’s really nice, especially for dry or combination skin. It’s designed to add hydration, and it does leave my skin feeling and looking better after removal. It gave me 10-hour wear easily, without shifting or fading. It looks lovely, with a luminous satin finish all day long.  It’s as good as any high-end foundation out there under $60. Definitely worth sampling if you are near a Sephora

Overall, the Tarte Rainforest of the Sea had items that–although I bought in haste–do not regret.  I’m addicted to the Skin Twinkle highlighter palette (recommended!). The eyeshadow palette is nice, but in a field crowded with beautiful neutral palettes I’m not sure it’s unusual enough to put super high on your list. I love the Quench formula for its moisturizing and minty tingle, but the fact that it easily broke put me off buying any more.

Laura Mercier Paint Wash 1

I became so curious about Laura Mercier’s Paint Wash Liquid Lip Colour formula ($28) each that I reached out to the company for samples. I was able to obtain four shades:  Petal Pink, Nude Rose, Red Brick and Orchid Pink.

I love a good high-end opaque formula that feels moisturizing. The Laura Mercier Paint Wash formula delivers. It’s easy to get a full-opaque wash of color, the shades are crowd-pleasing and very flattering, and they dry down to a semi-gloss finish. In other words, the formula is very Laura Mercier–a brand that understands beautiful while remaining appropriate (you can get a striking look that’s never too-too much).

The doe-foot brush makes precision application of these strong colors precise and easy.

There is no fragrance, and the formula is alcohol-free.

Laura Mercier Velours Lovers Lip Colour - 1_edited-1

I’ve had the opportunity to play with four of the new Laura Mercier Velour Lovers Lip Color ($28 each), a line of very saturated, satin-matte, moisturizing lipsticks. It seems like only a few years ago that lip color couldn’t deliver both saturation and moisture, fortunately Laura Mercier Velour Lovers demonstrates just how far we’ve come. Gorgeous color, French-inspired shades, and a hint of moisture–these lipsticks deliver it all.

Laura Mercier Velours Lovers Lip Color - 5

Laura Mercier Velour Lovers Lip Color is available at Laura Mercier online, NordstromSephora, Macy’sNeiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Lord and Taylor.

These are true “Laura Mercier” in their formulation–universally flattering shades that flatter a wide range of skintones. The shade I tried are:

Mon Cheri:  a gorgeous true bright red

Nars Velvet Tint Foundation - 19

Over the past few weeks, NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint ($44/ 1.7 oz) has earned a place as a staple in my foundation rotation. There’s so much to love. According to the line, this has an oil-free formula with SPF 30, a wonderful all-day oil-absorbing matte finish, an easy-to-pack tube, and anti-oxidants (Vitamin C and E) galore. The formula contains Rose Fruit Extract to minimizes pores and control shine.  Nars Velvet Matte Skin Tint is available at Nordstrom, Sephora, NARS online, Barneys New York (free ship always), Bloomingdales, Lord & Taylor, Neiman Marcus, and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Nars Velvet Tint Foundation - 23

Nars Velvet Matte Skin Tint is said to give sheer to medium coverage. I applied with fingers, and noticed that there is a “sunscreen-like” scent when first applied. The scent, which resembles that used in Smashbox’s and Kiehl’s SPF tinted moisturizers, fades after roughly a half-hour.

Nars Velvet Tint Foundation - 8

I used a light layer, and then another to get to medium coverage. The texture of the product needs a good five minutes to settle beautifully onto the skin (don’t judge until that five minutes passes, or you won’t get an accurate picture of the final texture). The texture is a true matte, but it does have some life in it (there is nothing mask-like about the texture). Although my combination skin does tend to glow in the t-zone throughout the day with other foundations, it did not with Nars Velvet Matte Skin Tint. I was able to get a good eleven-hour day out of this foundation without powdering (except for one day, when I used a heavy moisturizer underneath). The texture is beautiful– my skin looks matte, but very natural. It’s a soft matte.

FLAG 2

According to NARS, Velvet Skin Tint has the following benefits:

SOFT-FOCUS EFFECT
Transparent Blurring Powders instantly enhance the look of skin by helping to diffuse imperfections with a powerful optical effect.

SOFT-TOUCH FEEL
The powders’ unique, spherical shape compresses like a cushion, delivering a velvety-smooth, touchable feel and superior comfort on application.

REFINED PORES & SHINE CONTROL
Rose Fruit Extract visibly minimizes the appearance of pores, while controlling shine.

ANTIOXIDANT DEFENSE
Vitamins C, E, and broad spectrum SPF 30 protect against free-radical damage caused by environmental stress.

THE SOFT-TOUCH LOOK
Simply touch and go for an effortlessly perfected look. Glide on Velvet Matte Skin Tint to instantly even skintone with a soft-matte effect. Follow with Radiant Creamy Concealer where needed to instantly diffuse imperfections.

Nars Velvet Matte Skin Tint 14

Here are some comparisons with Nars Tinted Moisturizer in Alaska, Nars Velvet Matte Skin Tint in Finland, Alaska, and Groenland.  Along on bottom is Nars All Day Luminous in Fuji, Make Up For Ever in Y235, and Estee Launder Double Wear Intensity Light in 1.0. In person, Nars Tinted Moisturizer in Alaska and the new Velvet Matte Skin Tint are virtually identical shades.

Nars Velvet Matte Skin Tint 11

A good matte foundation is important to have in your beauty stash, even if you are partial to glow. Sometimes I want to control the area of my face that I want to glow (upper cheek, not forehead!) It’s lovely to have the NARS option–it’s definitely my favorite matte foundation at present. Of course, NARS Matte accepts highlighters, blushes (glowing and matte) and other products extremely well.

I got no breakouts, clogs, or other complications (I cleanse carefully with an oil cleanser, a Clarisonic and toner every evening always). In fact, the antioxidants in the formula are promised to give long-term benefits.

Overall, NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint is very well done. One of the things that I love about NARS is its professional grounding, sophisticated formula, and beautifully formulations.  NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint exemplifies all of these qualities.

Nars Velvet Matte Skin Tint is available at Nordstrom, Sephora, NARS online, Barneys New York (free ship always), Bloomingdales, Lord & Taylor, Neiman Marcus, and Saks Fifth Avenue.

mac flamingo park - 1

MAC Cosmetic’s Flamingo Park blushes ($22 each) released late last week, and so I thought I’d put up a few swatches before leaving town. Because most of these are so pigmented, I also ordered the MAC 184 duo-fibre fan brush ($25) to use the bolder colors more gently on my fair skin tone. I find this blush collection welcome, because MAC does blushes very well and these in particular are quite good. The powder is nicely milled, the colors last well, and the colors are fun and Spring-like. I love a nude look, but I also love beautiful wash of color. Some of these shades integrate more complex tones, such as Oh My!’s dash of red/pink and Life’s a Picnic red/coral.

mac flamingo park - 4 (1)

The two lighter shades–What I Fancy and Spring Flock–are both easy to wear colors that do not require special care in application for those in the medium to light skin tones. However, the more nuclear-pigmented shades (This Could Be Fun, Let’s Be Friends, Life’s a Picnic, and Oh My!) definitely require a fan brush. I found the duo-fibre MAC 184 fan up to the task–it’s baby’s whisper application allowed me to apply Let’s Be Friends without any problem when these arrived this morning.

Keep in my that Oh My! is a MAC exclusive. The rest are easy-breezy to pick up at Nordstrom, Macy’s, Bloomingdales, and other MAC sources.

If you are looking to keep your blush game strong, this is a collection well worth your time. Of course, care is needed with the deeper shades on fair skin, but nothing that a good brush can’t solve. Remember, Oh My! is a MAC exclusive. The rest are at Nordstrom, Macy’s, Bloomingdales, and other MAC sources.
