Laura Mercier Velours Lovers Lip Colour - 1_edited-1

I’ve had the opportunity to play with four of the new Laura Mercier Velour Lovers Lip Color ($28 each), a line of very saturated, satin-matte, moisturizing lipsticks. It seems like only a few years ago that lip color couldn’t deliver both saturation and moisture, fortunately Laura Mercier Velour Lovers demonstrates just how far we’ve come. Gorgeous color, French-inspired shades, and a hint of moisture–these lipsticks deliver it all.

Laura Mercier Velours Lovers Lip Color - 5

Laura Mercier Velour Lovers Lip Color is available at Laura Mercier online, NordstromSephora, Macy’sNeiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Lord and Taylor.

Laura Mercier Velours Lovers Lip Color - 3

According to the line, Velour Lovers Lip Color:

A highly pigmented, moisturizing lip color with a satin matte finish. Velour Lovers Lip Lover is a revolution in matte lipstick that couples delicate mattifying powders with moisturizing mango butter that creates a velvety texture that is smooth, creamy and long-wearing. Formula is buildable, offering medium to high coverage with a matte, sateen finish.

These are true “Laura Mercier” in their formulation–universally flattering shades that flatter a wide range of skintones. The shade I tried are:

Mon Cheri:  a gorgeous true bright red

Nars Velvet Tint Foundation - 19

Over the past few weeks, NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint ($44/ 1.7 oz) has earned a place as a staple in my foundation rotation. There’s so much to love. According to the line, this has an oil-free formula with SPF 30, a wonderful all-day oil-absorbing matte finish, an easy-to-pack tube, and anti-oxidants (Vitamin C and E) galore. The formula contains Rose Fruit Extract to minimizes pores and control shine.  Nars Velvet Matte Skin Tint is available at Nordstrom, Sephora, NARS online, Barneys New York (free ship always), Bloomingdales, Lord & Taylor, Neiman Marcus, and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Nars Velvet Tint Foundation - 23

Nars Velvet Matte Skin Tint is said to give sheer to medium coverage. I applied with fingers, and noticed that there is a “sunscreen-like” scent when first applied. The scent, which resembles that used in Smashbox’s and Kiehl’s SPF tinted moisturizers, fades after roughly a half-hour.

Nars Velvet Tint Foundation - 8

I used a light layer, and then another to get to medium coverage. The texture of the product needs a good five minutes to settle beautifully onto the skin (don’t judge until that five minutes passes, or you won’t get an accurate picture of the final texture). The texture is a true matte, but it does have some life in it (there is nothing mask-like about the texture). Although my combination skin does tend to glow in the t-zone throughout the day with other foundations, it did not with Nars Velvet Matte Skin Tint. I was able to get a good eleven-hour day out of this foundation without powdering (except for one day, when I used a heavy moisturizer underneath). The texture is beautiful– my skin looks matte, but very natural. It’s a soft matte.

FLAG 2

According to NARS, Velvet Skin Tint has the following benefits:

SOFT-FOCUS EFFECT
Transparent Blurring Powders instantly enhance the look of skin by helping to diffuse imperfections with a powerful optical effect.

SOFT-TOUCH FEEL
The powders’ unique, spherical shape compresses like a cushion, delivering a velvety-smooth, touchable feel and superior comfort on application.

REFINED PORES & SHINE CONTROL
Rose Fruit Extract visibly minimizes the appearance of pores, while controlling shine.

ANTIOXIDANT DEFENSE
Vitamins C, E, and broad spectrum SPF 30 protect against free-radical damage caused by environmental stress.

THE SOFT-TOUCH LOOK
Simply touch and go for an effortlessly perfected look. Glide on Velvet Matte Skin Tint to instantly even skintone with a soft-matte effect. Follow with Radiant Creamy Concealer where needed to instantly diffuse imperfections.

Nars Velvet Matte Skin Tint 14

Here are some comparisons with Nars Tinted Moisturizer in Alaska, Nars Velvet Matte Skin Tint in Finland, Alaska, and Groenland.  Along on bottom is Nars All Day Luminous in Fuji, Make Up For Ever in Y235, and Estee Launder Double Wear Intensity Light in 1.0. In person, Nars Tinted Moisturizer in Alaska and the new Velvet Matte Skin Tint are virtually identical shades.

Nars Velvet Matte Skin Tint 11

A good matte foundation is important to have in your beauty stash, even if you are partial to glow. Sometimes I want to control the area of my face that I want to glow (upper cheek, not forehead!) It’s lovely to have the NARS option–it’s definitely my favorite matte foundation at present. Of course, NARS Matte accepts highlighters, blushes (glowing and matte) and other products extremely well.

I got no breakouts, clogs, or other complications (I cleanse carefully with an oil cleanser, a Clarisonic and toner every evening always). In fact, the antioxidants in the formula are promised to give long-term benefits.

Overall, NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint is very well done. One of the things that I love about NARS is its professional grounding, sophisticated formula, and beautifully formulations.  NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint exemplifies all of these qualities.

mac flamingo park - 1

MAC Cosmetic’s Flamingo Park blushes ($22 each) released late last week, and so I thought I’d put up a few swatches before leaving town. Because most of these are so pigmented, I also ordered the MAC 184 duo-fibre fan brush ($25) to use the bolder colors more gently on my fair skin tone. I find this blush collection welcome, because MAC does blushes very well and these in particular are quite good. The powder is nicely milled, the colors last well, and the colors are fun and Spring-like. I love a nude look, but I also love beautiful wash of color. Some of these shades integrate more complex tones, such as Oh My!’s dash of red/pink and Life’s a Picnic red/coral.

mac flamingo park - 4 (1)

The two lighter shades–What I Fancy and Spring Flock–are both easy to wear colors that do not require special care in application for those in the medium to light skin tones. However, the more nuclear-pigmented shades (This Could Be Fun, Let’s Be Friends, Life’s a Picnic, and Oh My!) definitely require a fan brush. I found the duo-fibre MAC 184 fan up to the task–it’s baby’s whisper application allowed me to apply Let’s Be Friends without any problem when these arrived this morning.

mac flamingo park - 1 (5)

Keep in my that Oh My! is a MAC exclusive. The rest are easy-breezy to pick up at Nordstrom, Macy’s, Bloomingdales, and other MAC sources.

If you are looking to keep your blush game strong, this is a collection well worth your time. Of course, care is needed with the deeper shades on fair skin, but nothing that a good brush can’t solve. Remember, Oh My! is a MAC exclusive. The rest are at Nordstrom, Macy’s, Bloomingdales, and other MAC sources.

Tata Harper Contour and Highlight 1

Tata Harper is one of the premier creator of 100% natural, organic, non-toxic, anti-aging skincare. Even better, generally it’s effective skincare–to me, this is the true test of a healthy product. Recently, the line has begun to branch out into color, a lovely development given that so many are concerned about cosmetic ingredients. How awesome is that?  I was fortunate to try two–the Tata Harper Very Illuminating Luminzer and the Tata Harper Very Bronzing contour cream ($40 each).

tata harper contour and highlighter - 1

I’ve been working with these for several weeks, and find they are ideal for a contoured, highlighted cheek. These have a lovely sophisticated look, worthy of a high-end label.

As you can see from the swatches to the right. the Very Illuminating Luminizer leans slightly white-pink, and has a very natural effect when applied to the curves on the face. It has a very finely-formulated texture, and it can be easily sheered out or built up. It’s lovely. The Very Bronzing contour cream is one of the few products that leans slightly cool.

As the swatches show, the color of Tata Harper’s Very Bronzing can be used as a true contour shade (particularly compared to the much warmer-toned Soleil Tan de Chanel). Like the Very Illuminating Luminzer, the Very Bronzing shade can be fully sheered or built up as you like.

Tata Harper Highlighter 1

As genius as MAC’s Luna Cream Color Base is, Tata Harper’s Very Illuminating cream is easier to work with and more easily gives a more natural look. Obviously, the ingredients of both are quite different, as MAC makes no “all-natural” claims.

The ingredients for the Tata Harper Very Illuminating Luminzer are:   Helianthus annuus (Sunflower) seed oil*, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Fruit extract, Ricinus Communis (castor) Seed Oil, Cera Alba/Beeswax/ Cire d’abeille*, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Mica, Helianthus annuus (Sunflower) Seed wax, Iron Oxides (C.I. 77891), Camellia sinensis (Green Tea) seed oil*, Plukenetia Volubilis, Palmitoyl Isoleucine, Euterpe oleracea (Acai) fruit oil*, Titanium Dioxide (CI. 77891), Lavandula stoechas (Spanish Lavender) extract, Tocopherol (Vitamin E).

The ingredients for the Tata Harper Very Bronzing contour cream are: Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Fruit extract, Ricinus Communis (castor) Seed Oil, Helianthus annuus (Sunflower) seed oil*, Cera Alba/Beeswax/ Cire d’abeille*, Mica, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Helianthus annuus (Sunflower) Seed wax, Camellia sinensis (Green Tea) seed oil*, Plukenetia Volubilis, Palmitoyl Isoleucine, Euterpe oleracea (Acai) fruit oil, Iron Oxides (C.I. 77492), Titanium Dioxide, Octyldodecanol, Iron Oxides (C.I. 77491), Iron Oxides (C.I. 77499), Mica, Lavandula stoechas (Spanish Lavender) extract, Jojoba Esters, Trihydroxystearin, Alumina, Silica, Tocopherol (Vitamin E).

Dior Nude Air Glowing Gardens 1 - 1 (3)

Now that Peter Philips is in control at Dior Beauty, we’re beginning to see some lovely things. His Glowing Gardens collection for Spring 2016 is hitting so many of the right notes. _behind-the-scenes-with-peter-philips_medias_coverThe Dior Nude Air Glowing Gardens highlighters ($58 with a mini kabuki brush) have been their most popular items. I’ve ordered them so many times, only to have them become cancelled because they’ve gone out of stock. At this point, your best hope is to call your local counter or a Dior boutique to find them. Although the year is young, I suspect that these will become remembered as one of the better products of 2016. There are two, both highly reflective shimmering wonders. One is #1 Glowing Pink, the other is #2 Glowing Nude. After several cancelled orders, I finally nailed down both of them. Unfortunately, my Dior #1 Glowing Pink shipment has gone to California to enjoy some warm weather and won’t be here until next week or so. Because these items are likely to go completely out of stock soon, I thought I’m post some preliminary pictures of #2 Glowing Nude so that you can decide whether these are worth pursuing.

Dior Nude Air Glowing Gardens 1 - 1 (5)

These beautifully appointed glowing beauties are similar in formula to Chanel Mouche de Beaute and MAC Whisper of Gilt. Here are some comparison swatches.

Dior Nude Air Glowing Gardens 1 - 1 (1)

I think the presentation and quality of these is well worth the price, particularly if you missed out on Chanel Mouche de Beaute (which has a touch of sparkle, but is otherwise similar).  If you are looking for them, please do not wait too long. Given my experiences, they will be completely sold out before too long. Check here at Sephora to see a few left.

Serge Lutens LipstickSerge Lutens has added to his incredible lipstick line with two shades ($75 each).

Serge Lutens Lipstick Case

Comparative size of the packaging:

Serge Lutens Lipstick - 1

Number 11 is La Ceinture Du Cardinalwhich roughly translates to “The Cardinal’s Sash.” Like so many Serge Lutens names, this name evokes a story. The name refers to the bright fuchsia red sash worn by senior members of the Catholic church–a striking, vibrant, lush color. The formula is incredible–it is opaque in a single coat, is moisturizing and and is incredibly pigmented. It’s so beautiful.

Serge Lutens 11c

La Centure du Cardinal comes in a compact case (see the comparison, below) that holds 0.08 ounces, is refillable and fits nicely into a clutch. As seen on the right, the bullet comes to a charming point that can be applied very precisely with a brush or directly onto the lips.

serge lutens lip swatches 1 - 1

Serge Lutens #12 swatch

I’ve put up some comparisons to the left so you can orient yourself to a true red (Dior 999) and a purple-pink (Nars Fanny). As you can see, Serge Lutens La Ceinture du Cardinal is a striking fuchsia rose red.

Serge Lutens 11b

Serge Lutens Lipstick 12 a

Serge Lutens L’Hypocrite (No. 12) is a medium sheer plum beige neutral shade. This neutral-with-a-twist is a very modern sheer, which can be built up to add more opacity. L’Hypocrite feels moisturizing and has a slight sheen. L’Hypocrite is so on-trend, and is very easy to wear. The plum pulls it toward the cooler end of the scale, and the beige softens it enough to become a very universal and interesting shade.

serge lutens lip swatches 3 - 1

I pulled out a few other neutrals-with-a-twist, including Chanel Culte (limited edition) and MAC Shitake (limited edition). As you can see, Serge Lutens L’Hypocrite is lighter, sheerer and quite easily wearable.

Similar shades in other lines tend to be in opaque formulas, which can be challenging to wear. There is enough openness and sheerness to L’Hypocrite that enhances its wearability. It’s beautiful.

Serge Lutens 3

I love that Serge Lutens continues to find fresh and interesting colors and formulas in his capsule makeup line. Note that these colors are only available at Barneys New York in the U.S. Above, Liz is wearing Serge Lutens L’Hypocrite, Chanel Vitalumiere foundation, Nars Vengeful Blush, Make Up For Ever Aqua Waterproof Eyeliner, and the Nars L’Amour Toujours eyeshadow palette (reviewed here).

Overall, both Serge Lutens La Ceinture du Cardlinal and L’Hypocrite are so different, and both are stunning. Just when I think I’ve seen everything. Serge Lutens creates this incredibly unique and beautiful shades.

Both are available at Barneys New York.

MUFE HD Concealer - 15When I saw Wayne Goss’ review of the new Make Up For Ever HD Concealers ($27), I stopped by my local boutique to take a look at the new line (swatches of all shades are at The Beauty Look Book). I chose two–Y23 Ivory, which is a good match (leaning toward lighter) for my MAC NC15/ Chanel Ivoire skin tone. The other is the peachy R22, which can be used under as a corrector for blue-toned dark circles.

The consistency of these products is highly opaque with a very thin/small amount of product. You don’t need much at all. The squeeze tube is well-designed–it’s substantial but easy to work with. Unlike some, the MUFE HD Concealer comes with a secure screw top that doesn’t seem to work its way open for no reason whatsoever. The tip has a hard plastic white surround, which is a nice, controllable surface that can be easily cleaned to stay sanitary. The white color of this tip helps me see the amount of product coming out a bit better. I need (much) less than a drop to do both undereyes.

MUFE HD Concealer - 13

I tap a bit under each, and then pat it out with my ring finger. The tiniest bit gives me stable, all-day, opaque coverage.

MUFE HD Concealer - 7

There are a few outstanding features about the Make Up For Ever HD Concealer.  First, it does not look dry.  Some highly-pigmented concealers of yesteryear seems to turn under eyes into a desert. That’s because MUFE’s is infused with moisturizing skin care (the line calls them Hyaluronic Spheres and claims to stimulate collagen).  Despite the addition of skin care, the product doesn’t slide around or migrate into fine lines. I’ve tested this for four very long days, and was impressed with the longevity of the product for use undereyes. If you find the right color match and blend the edges, it does look like natural skin.

MUFE HD Concealer - 11

I’ve also tested the product on an area of my face to cover a small mole, just to see. I was happy with the performance–I did set it with a powder, which is important for liquid/creams I’ve found. For larger areas of the face, it’s a little hard to sheer out but it can be done. This is because the product is so pigmented.  The consistency is quite pleasant and blendable–it’s not as liquidy as Giorgio Armani’s Maestro Concealer, nor as thick as Keven Aucoin’s Sensual Skin Enhancer. It’s easy to work with.

If I were to buy again, I would have gotten either the corrector or the concealer, but not both.  The product is highly pigmented, and so using either one is fine for me. In other lines, I typically need both to get the job done. If I use the peachy R22 shade, I color-correct by bringing my foundation up to my undereye area. The Y23 shade can be used either alone or with foundation over it.  I do not typically powder over my concealer under my eyes, and I did not do so to test this product.

Overall, Make Up For Ever Concealer ($27) is a well-designed, high performing concealer. I’m surprised that the product’s longevity is so excellent given that it has moisturizer. The look is beautiful, and I can be more confident knowing that I my undereyes look well-rested and slightly lifted all day.

Tom Ford Packaging

Tom Ford Lipsticks ($52) have such a wonderful formula. Personally, I’ve slowed down on purchasing a high quantity of these. Instead, I’m focusing on finding just the right shade, and then wearing it to the end. In this post, I’ve found my perfect shade (So Vain), and then one that Liz loves (Forbidden Pink). I adore the formula. It looks so amazing. Tom Ford is such a genius. Here is Liz wearing Forbidden Pink:

Tom Ford Forbidden Pink 1

I hope that you treat yourself to at least one perfect shade.

Tom Ford Lipsticks are available from Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales, and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Here is So Vain:

Tom Ford Lipstick - 8

Tom Ford So Vain

Here is Forbidden Pink:

Tom Ford Lipstick - 5

Tom Ford Lipstick 2 - 1

My warm fair color has a touch of mauve in my natural lip color, and So Vain works so perfectly with my coloring. It picks up green in my eyes and the slight touch of red in my hair. Liz’s fair coloring works well with Forbidden Pink. It seems to brighten and emphasize her coloring so beautifully. It’s opacity covers well in a swipe or two, and there’s enough of a sheen (but not too much).

If you are looking for one perfect shade, Tom Ford Lipsticks are available from Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales, and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Nars Lamour Toujours 3

NARS The Narsissist L’Amour Toujours Eyeshadow Palette ($59/limited edition)(also available at Nordstrom, Sephora and Barneys New York) is a must-buy for a classic, thoughtful, all-in-one gorgeous collection of everyday eyeshadow looks. There are so many good basics, and a few interesting shades to add a little variation. It’s a wonderful update to your existing makeup collection, and the perfect one for someone who wants a go-to for the entire season. Nars L'Amour Toujours Palete 1 Liz and I have found this NARS palette format indestructible during our travels, so we love the packaging for its sleek practicality. L’Amour Toujours is no exception. Although some companies pack their palettes into cardboard or pad it with space around the pans, the design of L’Amour Toujours quietly reveals that the line’s lead designer is a professional artist. Measuring roughly 4 inches by 5 1/4., L’Amour Toujours packs maximum beauty into a manageable size. It is arranged to provide four generous (.11 ounce x 4) pans across the top for the most-used shades. The top row includes a Cream Bisque (matte beige), Shimmering Pink Sand (a beautiful shimmery warm highlight), Amethyst Ash (a complex, pigmented purple-gray-taupe, and a Black Truffle (deep black). The remaining eight shades are 0.05 ounces each, for a mix of mattes, shimmers, and complex shades that include: Golden Starlight; Sunburst Copper; Café Au Lait; Pistol Grey; Industrial Steel; Regal BlueShimmering Taupe Cashmere; and Shimmering Liquorice. Nars L'Amour Tourjours 2

I found the performance of the Narsissist L’Amour Toujours excellent. The top four shades are easy to use for an everyday eye. For example, it’s quite easy to lay down a base layer using Cream Bisque, a matte beige, and then add Amethyst Ash as a wash. If you like, you can add Shimmering Pink Sand as an inner-eye corner shade. The Black Truffle is a beautiful liner color. The rest of the palette adds exponential possibilities. In the look done for this post, Liz used Golden Starlight as a base shade, then she layered a touch of the Shimmering Taupe Cashmere, and a touch of the Industrial Steel (all with the Edward Bess Luxury Eye Brush). Trust us, it is so easy to get a polished, sophisticated eye with some very simple washes.

MAC Faerie Whispers - 1

Typically, MAC releases a shimmery neutral collection around the first of every year (always a treat). 2016 brings the MAC Faerie Whispers Collection, a lovely little cache of easy-to-wear colors that brings a little glow to the winter months. This doesn’t seem to be selling out very quickly, so there seems to be time for your to pick something up if anything catches your eye.

These products are available at Nordstorm, Bloomingdales, Macy’s, and Dillard’s (as well as MAC online).

MAC Faerie Whispers - 15

MAC Faerie Whispers - 19

For me, the best part of the collection is the foiled eyeshadows ($20 each). These are not as finely milled as other shimmery high end shadows (including Tom Ford’s Nude Dip)(reviewed here), but they do have a generous size and a really flattering sheen that melds to the skin without overly-emphasizing creases on the lid.

These are pretty, pretty, pretty. The formula is very soft and pigmented, and the colors blend together beautifully. This time around, I ordered the light champagne gold Fairy Land, the copper Joy Toy, and the brown-red Faerie Fayre.  I’m really tempted to add a few more–they’re that good. I can see having several in my top drawer to add a little polish and glow to those early winter mornings.

I wish that I had skipped the two blushes in the collection, Spellbinder and Cheek Pollen ($22 each). Both apply well and have a nice sheen, but neither seems unique enough to me to justify the purchase.

MAC Faerie Whispers - 6

Spellbinder is a soft, light pink-coral that has a touch of a sheen.  It’s lighter and not as shimmery as NARS Orgasm. Although I didn’t find a direct duplicate for it in my stash, there are several that were close enough. Spellbinder is a very light-toned blush, so if you are looking for a pop of color above a contour shade, then Spellbinder might be worth a look. However, check your stash carefully because similar colors are common throughout the beauty world.

Cheek Pollen is a soft brown shade with a slight gold sheen. It’s quite pretty, and looks good as a neutral blush. I think that Givenchy’s Ambre Croisere ($51) has a better shimmery/glowy bronze tone. Nonetheless, Cheek Pollen does a nice job coordinating with the rest of the neutral shades in this collection. It just doesn’t seem to add much in the way of uniqueness to MAC’s already-extensive blush line.

MAC Faerie Whispers - 2

At present, I’ve passed on the lip products from this collection seeing nothing that I cannot live without (given that my collection of lip products is already large). Of course, Temptalia has done her usual amazing job with those (here and here), so I’ll refer you to her expertise on these.

Overall, I know I’m going to enjoy these choices very much over the coming months. Although I’m hovering over the “buy” button for a few more of these eyeshadows, these choices (sans the blushes) could carry me for several weeks for an everyday run-to-work look using neutral blushes and lipsticks already in my collection.  I highly recommend the eyeshadows. If you would like a glowy finishing powder, Sparkling Rose is perfect for the fair-skinned (warm or cool).
