This week’s series of emails from Nars at New York Fashion Week (Fall 2012) brings this intriguing preview of some new items for some of Nars’ plans for his own releases in Fall 2012. These items were used on the runway this week at 3.1 Philip Lim. A new Undress Me multiple and new Carpates Stylo eyeliner are on the way. Also, it appears that Outlaw blush is returning. The application on the cheeks here look quite subtle and natural. Doesn’t Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer SPF30/PA+++ look fabulous? I’m enjoying wearing it very much.

“This girl is part cartoon, but emotional, edgy, ethereal, and on the brink of tears” says Francelle Daly, NARS Brand Ambassador. “Think, ‘comic book super hero meets emotional Roy Lichtenstein character.’”

Fabiola Arias is a young Cuban fashion design who features bright color, couture detailing and incredible hats. Take a look at this one:
At this weeks NYFW Fall 2012 show, NARS International Makeup Artist Uzo created rich, ombre eyes. Rather than blush, Uzo applied one of NARS Illuminator highlighters for  soft glowing cheek (although the press release didn’t say, it looks like Copacabana Illuminator to me).  You can see the strong glow in the picture, at the top.
“Fabiola wanted a look that was strong, but sophisticated at the same time,” said Uzo, NARS International Lead Makeup Artist. “We created a very rich eye with warm shades complemented by gold tones. The inner corners of the eyes are meant to look like they are illuminated, and to balance the look, the lips have color but are tinted rather than full-on.”

At Creatures of the Wind, NARS Director of Global Artistry James Boehmer created a look with gorgeous skin and strong eyes. He’s using Nars new Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer SPF30/PA+++–something I’ve been test wearing for about a week and really enjoying so far. As a quick preview, it has a good physical sunscreen and is said to reduce the appearance of dark spots, give brighter, more even skin and provide moisture. I’m enjoying it so far–it has a very soft, lightweight feel and has a lifelike glow compared to some others I’ve worn. It has medium coverage (a full review forthcoming). If you’re interested, Nordstrom is running a gift with purchase for the foundation here.
I love the way that Nars Cayenne looks on that eye!  “The look is about ethereal, forest-wet skin,” said James Boehmer, NARS Director of Global Artistry. “You can’t use enough moisturizer – it’s dewy and really radiant. The eye should be defined in its shape but worn-in with its effect. As if you can see the eyelid through it, which we get from the gloss.”
Below are the key products used to create the exclusive look:

Hello gorgeous! Here’s the latest trend report from NARS, backstage at Honor at this week’s New  York Fashion Week. There, James Boehmer (Nars Director of Global Artistry) used the following products:

FACE

·         Concealer
·         Loose Powder
·         Penny Lane Cream Blush
EYES
·         Paris Duo Eyeshadow
·         Zardoz Single Eyeshadow

The look was very subtle, using Penny Lane blush on the cheeks gives a soft glow. The eyes are very subtle, so that the color on the saturated clothes really stand out. The application heavily emphasized the eyes and lashes. The face chart:

Nars Gaiety Blush

 Blush, NARS  Comments Off
Jan 152012

Nars Gaiety blush ($27) is a cool candy pink matte blush with a touch of orchid.  Nars description says “joyful exuberance”–Cafe Makeup says “love.”

Of course, Gaiety is going to work beautifully for cool skin tones. Although I have warm-toned skin, I’ve long loved the look of a cool pink blush. It really makes me look healthy and glowing. The contrast is not jarring, instead, it adds a soft glow of color that adds a dash of interest. Yes, I love my reds, peaches, and bronzes, but candy pink awakens my skin like nothing else.

Lately, Nars blushes seem to have a more consistent formula. Some of the older designs (Mounia, now discontinued) required careful control with a stippling brush.  Perhaps it’s just me, but lately I can use a standard blush brush and average pressure to get a good glow every time. I put Gaiety in this same line–I love the formula, quality and sleek packaging of Nars blushes, and that there is also a vibrant pink-pink that I can apply without special care. Really, this one’s easy.

Of all my cool candy-pink blushes (oh, I can hear the comments already! Yes, I have a few), Gaiety is closest to the long-ago limited edition Chanel Turbulent, but does not require the special care and handling that Turbulent does (for more about this, see this review–really, it’s nuclear).  Unlike the vibrant, pearly Chanel Tubulent, Nars Gaiety can be applied normally and has a matte finish.

You can see the tonality difference here, with Nars Gaiety and Chanel Turbulent being the closest friends. Bobbi Brown’s French Pink (in the old round pot) is far less bright and clear.  Chanel Rose Tourbillon has a touch of rose red, but Nars Gaiety leans more blue/orchid.

Another comparison–here is MAC Full Fuchsia (reviewed here) which is an amazing color, but far more blue and fuchsia compared to Nars Gaiety.  Chanel Pink Explosion (reviewed here) is a soft cool pink, but not as cool as Gaiety. Finally, Chanel Tweed Fuchsia (reviewed here) has much more red and is deeper in tone.

I swatched some of the closest shades. As you can see, Chanel Turbulent was the closest. Keep in mind that Turbulent is applied very lightly here, because I tried to keep the tonality the same.  Turbulent shows as a more pearly texture, compared to the matte Nars Gaiety.  You can see that Chanel Rose Tourbillon is slightly more red and has a pearl texture.  MAC Full Fuchsia is a much deeper violet tone.

Same blushes:

Overall, one of my favorite pieces from this Nars collection. I’ve been worried that I might run out of Chanel Turbulent, and regretted the time investment needed to make it work. Nars Gaiety is a far more workable formula, in more sleek and packable packaging. I love the color, the forumla and the final effect. Again, my apologies that Liz isn’t here to model–she’s working quite hard and I hope that sometime soon her schedule will allow her to return.

Nars Gaiety was sent to Cafe Makeup for review without charge.
