NARS St-Paul-De-Vence Eyeshadow Duo Review and Swatches

March 13, 2015

Nars St Paul de Vemce Duo 1Part of NARS Spring 2015 collection is the NARS St-Paul-De-Vence Eyeshadow Duo ($35), a “neutrals with a twist” that sort of evokes this year’s marsala theme but leans toward the warmer side of it. To me, some colors in Nars’ line are instant classics–they are unusual enough because the shades are complex–but they are universal enough to fit within the makeup that one already owns. Paired with a soft peach or coppery blush, and I’m good to go.  NARS St-Paul-De-Vence is currently available at Nordstrom, Nars online and Nars boutiques, Sephora, Barneys New York, and Neiman Marcus.

NARS St. Paul de Venice 1 copyI’ve been reaching for this so often–it’s not the same old, same old brown and beige “work friendly” combination but it raises the fashion factor just enough. Still, it’s not a super vibrant color. St-Paul-De-Vence is daytime friendly. In addition to spring, this one is one of those great August-September transition to Fall colors that helpful to have.

Nars St Paule de vence duo1b

The shade on the left is described by NARS as a shimmering nectarine. This is redder than many soft shimmers that tend to be either beige or pink. On the right is a wonderfully formulated matte chestnut, that is a red-brown without being too much of either. These are applied softly here in these swatches, of course they can be layered for more intensity.  Sometimes I hold off on interesting basics like these, it took me months to by Nars All About Eve. The funny thing is, once you have them you use them because these are beautiful, everyday shades that enhance the eye color, are effortless to wear, and are just quite pretty.  I’ve been wearing the shimmer shade as a lid wash, with the deeper right shade in the outer corner and crease. I top these with a black liquid eyeliner. Reddish browns, in the range of MAC Dubonnet, look fabulous with these tones. Of course, the sheer shimmer Liguria lipstick (also part of NARS Spring ’15) works beautifully as well–the colors can of course be worn beautifully together.

Nars Porto Venere Eye Paint Review

March 11, 2015

Nars Spring 2015 Overview

One thing about NARS collection designs, they show tremendous aesthetic range. One year, it’s a bright blue and green paint-like eyeshadow. For NARS Spring 2015, it’s a collection that seems designed precisely for Tilda Swinton–the most subtle light nudes ever.

nars-tilda-swinton-embed-vHave you ever seen someone with porcelain cool lids, that had a slight natural gleam? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have them yourself? NARS Porto Venere eye paint ($25) delivers precisely that look–a clean, soft cool pearl color that looks clean, fresh, and pretty worn alone. It can also be used as a lovely neutral base for eyeshadows.

Nars Porto Venere II’ve been using NARS Porto Venere for about a week, either alone or as an eye base. It lasts beautifully, applies nicely with either a synthetic brush or finger, and gives all-day wear. Here is a swatch on the right, below:

NARS Porto Venere 41Porto Venere is a lovely addition to an already extraordinary range of cream eye colors. If this is something that you can see using, I recommend it highly. NARS Porto Venere is available at Nordstrom, Barneys New York, NARS online (and Nars boutiques), and Neiman Marcus,  I’ll be posting more reviews of NARS Spring ’15 over the coming days.

NARS Yeux Irresistible (Irresistible Eyes) Eyeshadow Palette Review

March 8, 2015

Nars Eyeshadow Palettes01Compared to the Nars Inoubliable Coup D’Oeil eyeshadow palette which has an overall cool impression, the Nars Yeux Irresistible Palette ($48) has an overall rich, warm look. In addition to the neutrals and jewel tones, this NARS Irresistible Eyes palette has one of the smoothest, most finely-milled golds that I’ve seen in a pre-made palette. These soft, pigmented, layerable shades apply and blend beautifully. This NARS Yeux Irresistible palette is available exclusively at Nordstrom.

Nars Eyeshadow Palettes12a copyThe six colors in the palette include the classic light natural shimmer All About Eve, the shimmering marsala-brown Jezebel, midnight blue-gray Thunderball, the beautiful metallic shimmery gold Colombo, the soft satin neutral sable Brousse, and the rich deep brown Coconut Grove.

The Irresistible Eye works with the neutral browns nicely, then I can add either Jezebel or Thunderball in the crease or as a liner to add a slight splash of rich color. So pretty–it really makes one’s natural eye color looking amazing.

Nars Eyeshadow Palettes13a A true “100”–NARS has knocked it out of the park with this one. Nars Irresistible palette is … irresistible. This is available exclusively at Nordstrom.

NARS Inoubliable Coup D’oeil Palette: Unforgettable Eyes

March 8, 2015

Nars Eyeshadow Palettes04

NARS Inoubliable Coup D’Oeil Palette (which translates to “Unforgettable Eyes”)($48) is a beautifully formulated neutrals-with-a-twist that is both work-friendly and suitable for a smokey evening eye. It’s a matte-lover’s dream. The pigmentation is gorgeous. These six shades pull from the black-and-white Pandora eyeshadow duo (on the bottom row, left and right) and add some beautiful deep shades for versatilithis is available exclusively at Nordstrom.

Nars Eyeshadow Palettes07Dalliance is the soft grey/taupe in the top left, an excellent matte with a quality that is rare to see in a palette.  Pyla is a smokey matte mossy green. Sidi Bou Said is a rich, vibrant violet-purple matte that leans slightly red. The satin white from Pandora (Pandora I), and the matte black from Pandora (Pandora II) are beautifully formulated. Luberon is the soft satin peach in the center bottom, which makes an excellent all-over lid shade. Here are swatches (except the bottom shades are on the top, and vice versa):

NARS Powder

Nars Soft Velvet Loose Powder Swatches

March 1, 2015

Nars powders2The new NARS Soft Velvet Loose Powders ($36 for 0.35 ounces) are winning my heart. These very finely milled powders provide a perfect finish,  perfect my foundation for all-day wear, eliminate any “glow” that typically happens at the end of the day and add just a touch of natural color. These are available at Nordstrom, Barneys New York, Bloomingdales, Neiman Marcus, and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Nars powders3 copy2

Designed to be worn alone or over foundation, the line describes:

NARS Soft Velvet Loose Powder sets foundation, controls oil and smoothes the texture of your skin while giving it a soft-focus finish. Infused with hyaluronic acid bonded powder, the non-drying, innovative formula visibly blurs the appearance of fine lines and pores while wearing comfortably all day. Photochromic technology keeps your skin looking naturally polished in every source of light.

The powders come in eight shades, from a near-white Snow to the deeper Valley:

Snow: For fair skintones

Flesh: For fair skintones

Eden: For warm medium skintones

Desert: Light rose undertones to enhance medium skintones

Beach: For deep yellow medium skintones

Mountain: For deep reddish-brown skin tones

Heat: For the deepest true brown skin tones

Valley: For the deepest neutral skin

Nars soft velvet loose powders

These have a similar melt-into-your-skin effect of the Nars Light-Reflecting Setting Powder, but add a light color coverage. I’m MAC NC15/20, Chanel Cameo and match well to Eden. Flesh can work for me, but it’s a little rose-toned and emphasizes my winter paleness. Eden makes me look a little more alive and matches my neck more closely. For the NARS genius factor, I’ve been adding Mountain to contour. It looks incredibly natural and adds just the right touch of dimension.

Nars powders1Here are some heavy swatches (applied very heavily so that you can see the color well):

Nars Soft Velvet Powder4Of course, these swatches look powdery because they are heavy, heavy, heavy.  You’d never wear them this heavy, but these just blend too much into my skin tone to see if I apply them naturally (especially Flesh, Eden and Desert). Also, I’m using one of the sharpest lenses on the planet literally. Liz calls this my “scary lens.” Another:

If you are trying to decide on a powder, I have to say that these are gorgeous and as lovely as some of the higher-priced French lines. I love that the shade range is so complete–some companies appear to ignore the very light and deep skin tones. Also, it’s a bit unusual (and welcome!) to see a line that acknowledges those crucial warm-cool skin tone differences. As far as brushes, I’ve been using a duo-fiber Chanel or MAC 187. I’ve also used the NARS Loose Powder Brush #10–this is also a good brush to just sweep all over the face to remove any excess powder.

These are available at Nordstrom, Barneys New York, Bloomingdales, Neiman Marcus, and Saks Fifth Avenue. If you are trying to decide between these and the NARS Light Reflecting Loose, they are two different products.  The Light Reflecting Loose adds no color, but the Soft Velvet do.
