Too Faced Born this Way - 1

Too Faced Born This Way Foundation ($39) came out last summer to much fanfare, and by now the foundation has been so successful that the line has expanded the shade range. Not that there hasn’t been competition in this space–this year has brought so many new foundation formations. Yet Born This Way seems unique for a several reasons.

  • It’s strength is in re-texurizing your skin. Born This Way focuses on perfecting the skin surface. If minimizing pores and textual imperfections is your goal, this Too Faced excels at this. I get compliments on how it evens out the texture and gives my skin a baby-texture.
  • Unlike MAC Pro Longwear Nourishing and Marc Jacobs Re(marc)able (both of which are high coverage in a single layer), Too Faced Born This Way is medium coverage out of the bottle. If you layer it up (which it does beautifully), you can get to full coverage pretty easily.  Some users may prefer this, as the texture of Too Faced is more like a traditional foundation.  You do not have to worry about over-applying, so you don’t have to be quite as careful. Also, the color range is more forgiving if worn more sheerly.
  • The texture is satin and lovely, no finishing powder required.
  • Too Faced Born this way has a texture that is closer to a true foundation, rather than a serum. Too Faced’s offering has much more coverage, and lacks the glowing, serum-like qualities of MAC Waterweight SPF 30. Also, Born This Way does not have the high-coverage serum qualities of NARS All-Day Luminous.

Most days that I wore Born This Way, I absolutely loved it. It seemed to give me flawless, all-day coverage. To be fully complete in this review, there were a few days that the foundation seemed to shift and break apart toward the end of an eight-hour day.

After numerous tries, I realized the problem days were those when my face was oilier, or when I was wearing a heavier moisturizer. One was incredibly warm, which led to melting.

If you have normal to dry skin you may find that you absolutely love, love, love Too Faced Born This Way. If you have oily or combination skin, well you will definitely want to sample this or purchase from a store that takes returns. It’s a bit more fragile than some of the super-foundations that came out this year. Still, it makes my skin look amazing when the conditions are right.

Bottom line:  You may find that this is your new holy grail, depending on your skin type and needs. I purchased during August in Light Beige (when my skin was a bit darker). If I were purchasing this today, I’d take the Ivory.

Too Faced Born This Way is available from Sephora, Macy’s, Ulta, Beautylish, Too Faced online, and Beauty.com.
